My friend at GYY has a G I retractable with 210 hp and variable pitch, and his tops out at over 210 mph versus my GII , fixed, tricycle, 160 hp IO320 going around 170-185 mph. He also has a much more difficult and expensive annual conditional inspection and burns considerable more gas per moment of fun [mpf]. On the other hand, his plane is IFR able and much quicker to climb out of [or into] the crud. YMMV, John Glasair-List Digest Server <glasair-list@matronics.com> wrote: * ================================================= ---------------------- Time: 03:04:14 PM PST US From: Craymondw@aol.com Subject: Glasair-List: Re: 2S power plants Has anyone re installed an engine with twenty to thirty horse power more than the previous engine and have they noticed any increase in cruise speed. In other words, if a 180 hp where replaced with a 215 hp engine would it be worth the money and effort. --------------------------------- Luggage? GPS? Comic books? I have a Glasair 2S FT with a IO360 detuned to 190 HP that burns 10.6 gals per hour that trues out to 206 mph. ( 24 inches manifold pressure and 2375 rpm) I have been wondering if I should replace the engine with an IO 360 215 HP engine. When I first completed the plane it only cruised at 190 mph. Then I started a long string of modifications. In 1996 I repainted the craft and made further mods (closing the cooling inlets, closing the engine inlet, changing the strut fairings, bringing up the flap setting etc) bringing the cruise up to 200 mph. Racers have informed me that the "Y's" on the landing gear create drag. Some say the wheel pants are not designed well. My biggest increase came from installing a set of experimental only Airflow Performance .028 Injector Nozzles (They are located in Spartanburg N.C.) that added another 6 mph bringing the cruise up to 206. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
