Perhaps some one could explain this? I was looking at a brand new Cirrus S22 yesterday and noted that the plane now has a small air fence located about 6-8 inches in front of the wing leading edge and about 2-3 inches below the horizontal plane of the wing leading edge on the front sides of the fuselage. Someone noted this before on a modified Glasiar to eliminate turbulence in front of and around the leading wing roots. The S22 front cowing and fuselage are also round - not the box design of the Glasair. Also, the Cirrus has circular, low drag openings in front that open up into the top of the engine. The air is redirected by air dams around the engine perimeter with flaps that sit against the top cowling piece. This is how my GII is configured, except that I have the old rectangular openings. Airflow out of the engine compartment is down through aero shaped ventes that blend into the belly airflow. The 2 exhaust stacks also exit through these and all are faired around the front fixed strut in a V-shape, with the strut fitted into the crotch of the V. This is definitely an interesting plane to look at from a design standpoint. The wings are very complex, with stepped leading edges that aid in stall control along with the laser drilled leading edge with the weeping anti-icing system. There are a few air dams, but not like I saw a few weeks back on a new Columbia - that plane had lots of air dams around the flaps and aileron splits with turbulence tabs along the top of the wings, about 1/4 to 1/3 the way back from the leading edge. Glasairs have the potential of going much faster than they do. The reason why I feel this way is because Glasair's aren't much faster than fat wing, dirty riveted RV's. Phoenix Composites wanted to take over production of Glasairs and no doubt, would have produced a much faster modified edition of the plane. A young Stoddard Hamilton engineer was working of various modifications for the plane. It appears that the New Glasair is only interested in the Glas Star. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message glasair-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Glasair-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/glasair-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/glasair-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
