Well, if the oil temp problem goes away after you re-do the cooler, then it's 
probably not a broken ring.

I've seen a broken 2nd ring... compression didn't catch it. Lot's of metal in 
the oil filter would. I should have taken a photo (this was before digital 
camera, I think) but the ring had worn away a section of the piston in the same

way your arms make "snow angels" in the snow.
