Does anyone know if the new 51% rule will affect the Glasair Two Weeks to Taxi
      program?
I'm looking to build a Sportsman 2+2 through the Two Weeks program but I need to
know if the new rule will somehow negatively affect me.
      Thanks,
      Josh

      From: "Bubblehead" <jdalman2000@yahoo.com>

I stopped for fuel yesterday in Winona, MN and the guy at the FBO said that the
A&P school that had been there had moved to Duluth, and they were cutting up
the airplanes that were not getting moved to the new location. So I walked down
      to take a look.

Included in the planes supposedly to be destroyed are a Glassair III N717SM and
a SX-300 N888SX. I peaked inside and the planes still have radios, HSIs and full
instruments! The guy at the FBO said that the owners had donated the planes
to the school instead of selling them so they did not have any liability issues
from selling them! Here are pictures.

I taxied past the planes on my way to the runway and took some pictures. Other
planes that will be scrapped include an L-19, a TriPacer, a T-33, a twin Beech,
a Aztec, and a Hiller helicopter. Pictures can be seen at

Does anyone know of a way to recover these planes or at least the avionics and
      engines?

Not really - we've become a truly litigious society. When lawyers
have convinced everyone that they can blame someone else for their
idiocy, everyone, except the lawyers, loose.

In all likelihood, the donations were conditional in that ownership
never be transferred in any way. As was stated, the previous owners
didn't want any liability trail but at least found a use for the plane
they felt was beneficial for a while. I don't know if that included
parting the plane out, but what parts would be OK and what parts might
impose liability on the builder is hard to say.

I should think that if the N number was sanded off and the aircraft sold as
scrap, there would be no liability trail. I can see no difference if a rubbish

man hauls the planes away and sells various components as junk.

I don't know if that included
parting the plane out, but what parts would be OK and what parts might
impose liability on the builder is hard to say.

owners had donated the planes to the school instead of selling them so
they did not have any liability issues from selling them! Here are

I should think that if the N number was sanded off and the aircraft sold as
scrap, there would be no liability trail. I can see no difference if a rubbish

man hauls the planes away and sells various components as junk.

      Why not call Glasair?

I asked Harry Delong (Glasair salesman) about that at Oshkosh, and he
said that the way he understood the proposed new rule it would not
adversely affect their program. I would suggest you call them though and
get the message from the source.

Kind of crazy when the last time I heard that the EAA boasts that no builder
has ever been sued by the relatives of someone killed in a homebuilt that
they had purchased. These planes have the added paper work that they were
years ago donated as salvage and they may be nearing the "Twenty Year Rule" that

exempts them from litigation. I could understand it a little if a Glasair had

an in flight airframe failure, but as hard as many flyers try, there has
never been one. I had a German yacht manufacturer look at my kit and ask if I

was building a tank! He added that Stoddard Hamilton had already done the work

that could cause problems if done wrong. I would try to get a lawyer to talk
      to them....they sound paranoid.
