Sonex is offering a jet powered kit that uses the engine of jet powered
radio controlled planes. Several years ago a friend of mine became interest in
RC jets and now demonstrates jet engines around the country. He went on to
say that the engines where very powerful and highly reliable. Sonex
reported these engines to put out 200 pounds thrust and I expressed how neat it
would be to put two pods of two engines under the wings of a modified
Glasair and remove the piston engine. He felt there wouldn't be a problem and
by
doing that would rid the plane of at least three hundred pounds in engine
weight and another few hundred pounds of heavy landing gear. Ken Johnson
told me that Glasair three's have a diving terminal velocity around 450 mph
because of the prop and that he had his Glasair up close to 400 mph in a
dive.
