The reason I put VG's on the bottom of the stab was to hold the nose gear o ff the ground longer after landing. I didn't like the way I would lose cont rol authority halfway thru the roll out and the nose would just drop. (A fl ight instructor thing.) I figured the air was probably separating at the hi nge line when the elevator was fully deflected up. I haven't taken the VG's off since I put them on, but my recollection was t hat they made an improvement and, like the other commenter here, I can keep the nose wheel off the ground well to the end of the roll out now. (But so me Glasair pilot with an RG told me at OSH he had tried them after my artic le and didn't notice any difference.) I recall starting at something like 4 inches from the hinge line and workin g my way forward an inch at a time until they seemed to "kick in." I stoppe d experimenting after that. They are stuck on with hot glue and have stayed on thru ice. I don't see any reason why VG's on the bottom of the stab would improve sta ll speed. That would be a wing thing. Hope this helps, Mike Palmer <><

Mike Good point. Guess I mis-spoke when I called it a stall speed issue. What I m ean is I think the GI stab/elevator loses authority at a higher speed vs the GII stab would, and as a result the nose drops and the a/c descends, which p roduces a similar result as a stalled wing at touch down. I've concluded keeping a little power on at touchdown helps break the descen t and maintain elevator authority... > On Sep 24, 2013, at 2:31 PM, mppalmer@aol.com wrote: > > The reason I put VG's on the bottom of the stab was to hold the nose gear o ff the ground longer after landing. I am the former owner of a Glasair 1RG. I have been looking at a TD for sale in South Florida. Looking for someone to do a pre-buy and someone who can transition training in a TD. Thought I'd try here too! Thanks Bruce -------- Bruce Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=409157#409157
