1. 08:16 AM - How to know when to replace your vacuum pump (mppalmer@aol.com)

Subject: Glasair-List: How to know when to replace your vacuum pump
I just replaced the vacuum pump on our Glasair, that quit in flight after about
1500 hours on it.
Interestingly, I had readjusted the vacuum regulator about a year ago because suction
was falling off.
I had thought that suction had fallen off before the adjustment valve on the regulator
had backed out a little. (The jam nut was a little loose). But when I
did a test flight this morning, I saw my suction gauge showing 6". (Way up from
the 4.5" I had had it set for before readjustment.)
So, when you see your suction falling off and/or readjust your vacuum regulator,
it's time to change your vacuum pump.
Probably the same is true for your engine when you have to shim your oil pressure
regulator to maintain oil pressure.
