--> Homebuilt-List message posted by: Gsrth@aol.com Drew, Sounds like an interesting project. Hope it goes well. I'm also in the process of selecting a project to build. I would like to do a plans only project and have narrowed my choices down to a Horizon I, Maranda S14H, or the RagWing Stork. I would be particularly interested in what you think of the plans for the Stork. The information I have is it is a fairly newly drawn plan without a lot of flight experience behind it. I like the concept, but wonder if it wouldn't be a little more difficult for a first time builder than one of the others. What do you think? Garth

    Subject: Re: airplane plans
--> Homebuilt-List message posted by: drew.schumann@us.army.mil The Stork plans really encompass very little new. There aren't a lot of them flying, but they are directly derived from the Fisher/Ison aircraft designs. The slots and rigging system are non-typical homebuilt. The slots make it the aircraft that it is; an extremely efficient STOL machine. I wouldn't use Roger Mann's rigging system. He uses throttle cable for his aileron controls, in order to simplify the wing removal system. If I were to build it, I would lift the control system from a Super Cub. I know a guy who built the fuselage in a long weekend, and did a good job of it. The wings are similar in effort to building a biplane, what with the slots and flaps. I go back and forth often on whether to do a Stork or a Super Cub clone for my homebuilt project. I want a STOL machine; and I would like a standard design like the SC, but most of the welding work is "just for looks" on the structure. The Stork is "ugly" but is pure function. I'm the kind of guy who doesn't like to reinvent the wheel, but detest doing an ounce of superfluous work for appearance sake. Well, that's probably more than I needed to say, but that's where I am on this project. --> Homebuilt-List message posted by: "Ron Eason" <ron@jrl-engineering.com> Drew, I thank you for working with these kids and sparking their interest in aviation. I was inspired by a person like you in a similar way. I am a Aeronautical Engineer with a background as a rocket test engineer working on the Apollo Lunar Assent Module engine and the Gemini secondary propulsion rendezvous technology for Bell Aerosystems. You see you may never know how you will influence these kids. I am building a KR2. Thanks, Ron P.S This is my way of thanking all who helped guide me along my path. ----- Original Message ----- From: <drew.schumann@us.army.mil> Subject: Re: RE: Homebuilt-List: Postings > --> Homebuilt-List message posted by: drew.schumann@us.army.mil > > Hi Franz, > > I'm on several lists, and just don't know which one I'm going to build. My "project" is to build a homebuilt as part of a series of presentations to 4th to 6th grade students, where each class will build a couple wing-ribs or other simple piece, under my direct supervision. The airworthy parts, each child will sign with a sharpie, so that they will have helped build a "real airplane" and their name will be on it. --> Homebuilt-List message posted by: "Ron Eason" <ron@jrl-engineering.com> Drew, N0 ONE can take your dreams and desires away from you, don't give up on anything, but have patience. I am 63 now and I owe my path in life to my dad. His motto was, know something, do something and be something [ I think it was a Kettering quote] achieved someone something, he advised me to follow my hearts desire and he would help as much as possible. I left home with $200.00 a new suite and no auto, after giving my car to my brother, to work for Bell Aerosystems. Dad had a 8th grade education and two patents to his name with General Motors attached. I have no patents, and a BS Aeronautical Degree, but I did help put men on the moon and we brought them back, and it was fun. I would have worked for nothing at all, to have the chance to contribute to this noble undertaking. May God Bless you in whatever you are doing.
