Joe,
I will not receive my engine until late February as per their
acknowledgement. I was told when I ordered it that since they had
added hydraulic valve lifters to the engine, there had been a surge
in orders and a push out in delivery times. So no I have not cleaned
my carburetor. What is the story behind this? How do you like your
engine? How long have you had it? Is there anything else you can
tell me? What can you tell me about its performance? Where are you
located? I have had little owner feedback up until now and am
starved for information.
Many thanks,

I've been flying 633Z since April 2004.
I don't have the hydraulic lifters so every 50 hours I check the valve
clearance. I check the head bolt + prop bolt torque at the same time.
The engine runs smooth + strong. I've taken a bunch of fellow 601XL
builders + prospective builders along and they like it too.
I had a couple of instances of rough running on takeoff and one during
a climb at 2000 feet. I grounded the plane after that one and didn't
make the Zenith Cooperstown CA (I think) flyin. I removed and cleaned
the carburetor that weekend. The slide position is controlled by vacuum.
And the rubber bellows provides the resistance and return force.
When I moved the slide with my finger I noted rough spots near idle and
near full throttle - where the slide spends most of its time. I used
carburetor cleaner liberally to remove the dark deposits. And the slide
moved freely in all positions.
I've flown about 5 hours since then and the engine runs more smoothly at
idle and at cruise. The contamination built up slowly in the carburetor
and I didn't notice the change - except for the stumbles, and I didn't
like those a bit. I am confident that I found the problem. I ruled out
other causes.
Now that I know what the symptoms of carburetor buildup are I'll clean
the carburetor when I notice them or every annual - which ever comes
first. I took another look at my copy of the Jabiru maintenance manual
and I see no mention of this critical maintenance item.
I tried the yahoo groups - yuk. If no one posts on this group, I'll miss
out. But, I don't like the yahoo groups site.
