Dear Listers,
Today 9/8/2007 I have added a new real-time spell checker function to all of the
BBS Forums at Matronics. When you reply or create a new message on the Forums,
you will notice that misspelled words will be high-lighted in yellow. If
you left-click on the word, you will be prompted with a drop-down list of suggested
spellings.

Enjoy!

Subject: | Electrical Problem with my 3300 |
Dear Jabiru Listers,
My name is Jeff Paris. I built, own and fly a Zentih Zodiac CH601XL powered by
a Jabiru 3300 engine and this is my first time on this list and I was hoping for
some answers about a problem I believe I'm having with my airplane.
Two weeks ago I was flying home from Canada and had to land in Rochester to setle
with US Customs. As I was making my way into the Class C airspace the tower
was having trouble reading my transmissions. I also noticed that the orange/red
warning flag in my turn coordinator was pulsing in approximate unison with
my strobe system as it flashed. Once on the ground the tower read me loud and
clear, but I had turned off my transponder and GPS to get some wattage back
for transmission.
After customs finished with me I was not able to start the plane, dead battery?
I pulled the cowls for good measure and a inspection under the hood and nothing
was out of the ordinary in terms of loose connections or damaged wire. I
jumped the plane and headed back to my home airport. I kept my eye on my Xerion
Engine analyzer voltage readout as well as my Dynon readout: They read at the
start of the trip about 12.1 volts and decreased to about 11.7 volts. Normally
I'm seeing 14.2 volts at cruise power indicated on each gauge.
This week I pulled the cowls and did another inspection in whih I tested the battery
with my multimeter and I was getting a reading of about 11.9 volts. I then
thought maybe my Odyssey PC625 dry cell Battery had a bad cell and was not
able to charge itself properly. Of course I went out and got a replacement battery
and re-installed and thought let's see what happens?
Well I went flying with my Father to a builders forum at a nearby airport and I
noticed that my volatge readouts seemed to be dwindling again as we made the
trip to and fro. My question is What is wrong here? Is my alternator already
shot after 166 total hours engine/airframe. So far my engine has been a solid
consistent and reliable performer. Does this have something to do with my volatage
regulator? HELP!!! I can't find anything in my engine manual that clues
me in.
Thanks for your time consideration and your expertise.

Jeff, your alternator is not producing, what you are
reading voltage wise is battery voltage. To charge
your battery the alternator has to produce 14 volts to
overcome the internal resistance of the battery. If
you are reading less than 14 volts (approx)then there
is something wrong with the alternator or voltage
regulator or wiring.

Sounds like the alternator to me. It should put out 14V, which is what you
normally see. The battery by itself is 12V, so without the alternator you'll
see voltages around 12 that go down and down until they're too low to run
your electrical equipment. Seeing 12V on your engine monitor is a sign that
the battery isn't charging. It will only go downhill from there.

I've had a few problems like that.
I've traced them all to bad crimp joints.
I've now soldered almost all of the high amperage connections
between the alternator and battery and have my fingers crossed.
When I cut open the bad joints I can see that the wire is oxidized.
It makes a high resistance connection that stops the current.
but, it may just be me + my work practices ........
(I did use good quality terminals + crimper.)
