Tony Graziano 601XL/Jab3300; 284 hrs --- Martin As a possible short cut to the cause of this problem, the alternator will not charge unless the regulator is connected to the battery. It would be a good idea to confirm this connection and the master switch and circuit breaker in this circuit. The two white output wires from the alternator should each show more than 12V AC at idle and about 30V AC at 1200rpm. My charging system stopped working yesterday in flight. all the wiring seems OK. I think the fault is coming from th rectifier as the EIS tachometer (that takes information from one of the two wires from the alternator) is working. how can I check? can I run the engine with the rectifier diconnected and measure the voltage on two white wires comming from the alternator? how much should I read? is there a way of checking the rectifier? thanks Martin Avid Flyer HH/Jabiru ========== > Time: 06:37:45 PM PST US > Subject: JabiruEngine-List: Electrical Problem with my 3300 > From: "Jeffrey J Paris" > > > -............................. . The engine is a Jabiru 3300. This is not my aircraft. I am preparing it for sale for my friend's widow. When flying the Zenith Zodiac 601 XL today I found that the right ignition was dead when I was performing the pre-shutdown tests. It was fine when I performed the run-up. I waited about 30 minutes, tested it again and it worked fine. All wiring is intact and in pristine condition. The ignition switch is functioning properly. I went for another 30 minute flight and once again found that the right ignition was dead when performing the pre-shutdown testing. After another 30 minutes it was functioning again. I have flown the aircraft 25 hours recently and this is the only problem that I have experienced. Could this be a coil problem, breaking down when heated? Is it more likely the transitorized ignition system? Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting would be appreciated. Thanks Colin Noseworthy ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 01:49:59 PM PST US Subject: Re: JabiruEngine-List: Electrical Problem with my 3300 From: info@usjabiru.com Jeff, As we discussed on the phone the other day you have three possible cuases to investigate: alternator, regulator, or wiring. What did you find? The most common cause is corrosion in the crimp connections connecting the yellow wire to the 12 volt system followed by corrosion in other crimp connections in the system. I would replace those crimp connectors as a first step after checking that the alternator is working. To check alternator disconnect from regulator and test between leads with a continuity meter. If continuity exists then the alternator is junk. If no continuity then run engine with a multi meter hooked up and set to read AC voltage. If 10 to 30 volts (depending on rpm) is present then alternator is ok. If alternator is working and all connections are good then the regulator is probably bad. This happens once in a while but bad wiring or crimp connections are the culprit 90% of the time. Pete Krotje Jabiru USA > > > > Dear Jabiru Listers, > > My name is Jeff Paris.
