Subject: | Bing 94 carb question |
I recently dissasembled, inspected and cleaned the Bing 94 carb on my Jabiru 2200A
#1574. All is well after 240 hours.
Yesterday, I did the same for a customer's carb from Jabiru 2200A #2058. It is
in great shape but I found one anomaly (or so it seems to me) and would like to
find out if any of your Bing 94 carbs have this same thing. In the brass tube
that receives fuel from starting chamber in the float bowl (not the main jet
area but the small diameter chamber at one corner) there is a tiny hole in the
side of this brass tube about 3/16" below the top of the fuel bowl, and thus
above the normal fuel level in the bowl. If this hole is not supposed to be
there it could be contributing to the cold start problem he is having by allowing
excess air to be drawn in and less than full rich fuel charge during engine
start.
My question is this: Have any of you seen this tiny hole in the side of the brass
tube that picks up fuel in the start chamber? My Bing 94 does not have this
nor does any Bing 64 carb on which i've worked (lots of them).
I spolke to Pete yesterday about this and he said he has never noticed this but
would be looking at one of his carbs to see. I'd like to hear from any other
Jabiru operators with Bing 94 carbs to see if this tiny hole is a manufacturing
anomaly or "as designed" in the later engines.
I've attached a photo of the carb with the hole I'm asking about.

Just checked the Bing (guess its a 94...) that came with my 3300a s.n. 1053
It does indeed have the hole as per your pic. Bing is unused/unneeded.

J.
Thanks for your quick reply. It is unlikely that this hole is in more than one
carb if it is not intentional, so it is beginning to appear to me that this is
a design change implemented sometime after mine was built.

Subject: | 2200A EGT monitoring |
I have an Grand Rapids Technology EIS 2000 with 4 CHT readings on my Jabiru 2200A
(#1574). I plan to exchange two of these CHTs for two EGTs. This is a pusher
configuration and I'm would like to know which of the four cylinders should
I monitor for Max and Min EGT.
Are any of the four cylinders likely to show a higher or lower EGT than the others
in a pusher configuration?
If there is not a lot of consistency or much difference between max and min, then
it should not make that much difference which ones I monitor.
I may end up drilling holes for EGTs in all four exhaust tubes and monitor them
all selectively with a switch.
Thanks in advance.

Thom,
Looks like the bottom of the tube has had a taper machined on it,like you
would do to assist pressing it into the carb body.

Yes, Gary. I noticed that too. My guess is they make both ends tapered so that
it does not matter which end is pickup by the robot that presses the other end
into the base of the carb. Nothing is made by hand anymore.... other than our
airplanes :-).

Just thought the hole would be below the float level if it were reversed.

Now that I know that this one carb is not the only one with this hole, I must assume
that it is there by design and performs some desirable function. Since it
is above the fuel level its purpose must be to allow some air to be drawn in
along with the fuel in the starting chamber, in effect either leaning it somewhat
or perhaps it helps to aerate or atomize it a bit. Only the Bing engineers
will know the real reason it is there. My thoughts are pure speculation.

The Bing that was once on my engine (#2062) also has this hole, for
what it's worth.

I have seen these holes above fuel level on many carbs and yes, it is to
aerate the fuel to assist in vaporisation.
Cheers,
Peter
