Subject: | Replacement Oil Cooler |
I got my plane in the air here just about 2 months ago and went to change the oil
the first time this weekend. I was a little disappointed that the cooling duct
as received with the engine has too small an area to get ANY of the equivalent
oil filters in place. Early on I had noticed a small wear spot on the end
of the Ryco filter and I put a small piece of tape in there to give some wear
resistance. The issue is that all of the replacement filters are about 1/16"
taller (or longer) than the original Ryco. Some of the filters are also about
1/8" bigger in diameter in addition to being just a little longer. This will mean
rebuilding the front lower section of the cooling duct, of course after it
has been all finished, painted and flying season is upon us. :( I tried the
NAPA 1394, Pennzoil, Wicks, Fram, Bosch equivalentsto no avail.

Install the oil filter. Trim the air-duct as needed for clearance. Put some
cardboard and tape over the oil filter to give clearance and than re-glass
the airduct. Remove it all when it dries and clean up the edges. My guess is
the air-duct was fitted to close or low. No big deal easy fix.

Help !
I think I found the problem...it's the starter...it looks like the front bearing
was just touching the edge of the hole it goes into and now doesn't fit in there
at all...there's a good 1/4 in of play at the end of the armature and is
going against the field...How can I get a hold of Jabiru?? The west coast number
was disconnected...
thanks,
chris ambrose

Jabiru Pacific is open for business and the phone works fine. I just called
him. So before passing on inaccurate info (and potentially damaging info)
you should check the number you dialed to make sure it is 559-431-1701

NAPA Gold 1394, Fram Ph4967, Baldwin B33 all fit if airducts are installed
correctly. It is possible to install ducts too far down and create some
interference. You might first try repositioning your ducts to fit
correctly. If you cowl design requires the ducts to be out of position then
you will have to modify the ducts to fit.

Thank you Paul...
I took the starter apart and found that the front bearing came out of where it
was supposed to be .I have to get the pinion gear off them press the bearing
back into it's spot...then punch the edges so it won't come out again. Hope to
be back in the air tomorrow !
