Whichever method you use the end product should be .010" maximum clearance, cold,
after torquing the head bolts. After setting the clearance to .010" with your
feeler gauge, with the gauge still in place, rock the prop back and forth a
bit to see if the clearance gets larger, i.e. the gauge gets looser. If it gets
looser, then re-adjust at this loosest point to net .010" clearance.

I think what you may be encountering is that when you have the other
valve fully depressed, the valve spring forces the camshaft away from
its otherwise "neutral" position, causing the adjacent valve
clearance to increase. I never thought about this before you
mentioned it, but to me it is a possibility. This points out that the
cam is floating in about .002" of oil, eh?
