The temperatures transients mean things expand at different rates so as the engine warms cleances will move all over. I've always used 12 thou, my main concern after valve seat problems with the early heads was to make sure the vales seated well and not how far they opened. My way: With the one valve depressed the other tappet should rattle nicely and the just stop (rattling) with a 12 thou feeler gauge under it. Seldom did I make any adjustments even with the old soft ally bendy heads. Chasing a few thou is a waste of time, means you are tweaking aduster unnecessarily and several failures have been from broken adjusters. I never thought about this before you mentioned it, but to me it is a possibility. This points out that the cam is floating in about .002" of oil, eh?
