Hey Guys, FWIW, when I attended Rotax school at Lockwood they recommended spinning the filter on until contact with the gasket is made, then twist it on an additional 3/4's of a turn. Also, they recommended using a dab of the old oil to wet the gasket. Apparently, the carbon in the old oil helps the filter to stick. If this method helps the filter stick on an engine that shakes as bad as a Rotax 9xx does it should have no trouble at all staying on a Jab. Another thing I liked that they suggested was filling the new filter with oil before spinning it on to prevent a large void of air being pumping through the journals at first start up after an oil change. Makes sense. BTW, I like the Baldwin B-33 filter, too. Regards,' John Lawton Whitwell, TN (TN89) Europa N245E - Flying Jabiru 3300 Ximango N135XS - Flying Rotax 912s (certified)

John, That is pretty much SOP - putting a bit of oil on the filter gasket and filling the filter with fresh prior to fitting. But my understanding is that the reason you apply oil to the gasket is to prevent it grabbing when you tighten it up and possibly tearing or winding out of shape. And are you serious about 912's shaking ? I'd be balancing your prop as soon as possible ! I've always wondered why the filter instructions said to use new oil to lube the gasket. Daredevil that I am, I just say screw 'em, and use a drop of the old oil...besides, when I'm puttin' the filter on, I don't have the new oil open yet. I'll be damned if they're gonna make me use new oil on that gasket and cause a shortage of oil on the market. : ) Lynn Matteson Kitfox IV Speedster, taildragger Jabiru 2200, #2062 Prince prop (64 x 30, P-tip) Electroair direct-fire ignition system Rotec TBI-40 injection (sleeved to 35mm) Status: flying...1089 hrs (since 3-27-2006) Temp. grounded...building new intake manifold. Good Afternoon Lynn, The directions on the Champion filter say to use Dow Corning Compound number four on the gasket. If that is not available they say to use engine oil. Hi Bob- Interesting...is that a silicone compound? I used to have a tube of Dow Corning Compound, but I don't recall any number, but that was YEARS ago. Any chance that Champion is owned by Dow...or vice versa? Sorry, that just the pessimist in me trying to get out. : ) Hey, Bob, you might be interested in my latest project...another intake manifold for the TBI. The other one was ok, but I'm shooting for perfection. I wanted to try a bit longer runner length, and bell- mouthed ends inside the manifold. Ever since I built an updraft manifold, I've always had cylinder #1 running about 100+ degrees cooler than the other 3. So I thought I'd make another one, and see what happens. (Yes, I did swap probes, etc., but to no avail...plugs always look good, also.) I think I know what the problem is, and if this manifold changes things, I'll report my findings. But in the meantime, here are the exhaust pipes as they appear after using the updraft intake and the Rotec TBI, running lean of peak EGT for about 360 hours: Left bank....cyls 2 & 4 Right cyls... #3 on top and that cooler-running #1 on the bottom. There ain't much broke, but I'm gonna fix it anyway! : ) Lynn Matteson Kitfox IV Speedster, taildragger Jabiru 2200, #2062 Prince prop (64 x 30, P-tip) Electroair direct-fire ignition system Rotec TBI-40 injection (sleeved to 35mm) Status: flying...1089 hrs (since 3-27-2006) Temp. grounded...building new intake manifold.
