Hello Barry,
Thank you for the thoughtful and cordial reply to my post. It is replies
like yours that make forums like this one so enlightening, friendly and
filled with such goodwill towards other pilots, mechanics and builders. I,
for one, recognize that the members of this forum are all very lucky, nay,
truly blessed to have someone with your boundless aviation knowledge in our
midst, especially someone who, by the mere use of their own words, has
clearly demonstrated themselves to be more knowledgeable than the largest
and most experienced Rotax dealer in the USA. I especially appreciate you
taking time out of your busy schedule to post such an amicable, learned
reply to a know-nothing like me. I hope you wear a name tag when you go
places so if on some rare occasion I ever encounter you I will have the
opportunity to bow in your presence.
Would you please call Dean Vogel at Lockwood Aviation at 863-655-5100? Dean
is Lockwood's principle instructor and could obviously really use a dose of
your worldly guidance.
Warm regards,
John Lawton

Hello John:
Your sarcasm totally wasted on me, it is a total waist of time. It would
better be spent to THINK of how ridiculous the idea of carbon is in securin
g
an oil filter. And do some research into the mechanical engineering and
chemical fields in which this topic extends.
Some simple question that should be asked:
Gee John, how much carbon is required, or how much is too much for this
bonding process to take effect (give me Min & Max)?
Or gee John, how much HEAT is required for the carbon to bond to BOTH the
rubber and aluminum sealing face?
Or gee John, what size should the carbon particles be - - Ya know too big
and oil may leak right around them, or too small and the bonding process ma
y
not take place at all!
Or gee John, how many parts per million are required (again give me Min &
Max).
Or gee John, what should the RMS finish of the 'O' Ring be and the sealing
surface be?
Or gee John, how much carbon SHOULD my engine produce ' what if I do not
have blow-by and my engine does not produce carbon?
Do you get the engineering idea? To consider the ridiculousness of the ide
a
that carbon has to be used in sealing =85 Is a total bunch of BULL-DINKY!
Now, unlike you, I'm NOT picking on you. You just happened to be the last
straw in this ridiculous thread with NO scientific proof. It strained all
basic engineering logic - Not even Rocket Science engineering logic.
I and many do-it-yourself'ers use oil on the 'O' rings. Use OLD oil if you
wish, use NEW oil... I don't care, but whomever starter this BULL-DINKY
GARBAGE of carbon aiding is sealing should have their have their ears
checked for carbon. Because it is sealing off common sense, basic logic an
d
centuries of engineering from entering their brain.
And again John, I'm not singling you out. What I REALLY HATE is the speed
at which the Internet spreads oral deification. The unfortunate part is
that innocent people come to forums to gain REAL knowledge because of the
need and the desire for real knowledge. And they unknowingly get
inundated with BULL-DINKY. They are not engineers, they are just honest an
d
interested people, with a interest and love of flying. They want and NEED
REAL answers. Too bad, there is not an origination of Common Sense Police.
Yet we do have all these self-appointed PC Police. Bet their Mommy though
t
they never did anything wrong.
I am not going to get Dean Vogel involved. If he wishes to post that is OK
.
So, let me Politically Incorrect, someone has to tell the truth and know
what they are talking about. Ban the Donkey-Dust!
Name Tag firmly affixed.

Hi Bobby, what I sent was links to pictures on the Yahoo 'jabiruengines'
list photos section. It's a good group and has as much going on as the
Matronics list.
My solution is a wrap made of first aluminium tape, then dry fibreglass
tape, then aluminium tape, then locking wire.
Gas seal, support, more seal and hold on the fibreglass, the wire holds
it all in place when the glue on the ally tape gives out (which will be
straight away).
I used a wrap that cost money but after time all that was left of it was
the fibreglass tape that was the main part of the wrap, so I figured a
cheap solution.
The second set of pictures (one below) showed a ring was added that was
the same diameter as the silencer entry, the ring was welded in place
and then the bridge sealed with compound and a jubilee clip, a good
solution but machining and welding needed.
Good luck, Regards, Clive.
P.S. let me know if the screenshots below don't come out.

James,
thanks for your input on the "List"
I could not open the photos - Could you send them direct in a .jpg file
??
I am planning on getting some Motorcycle Exhaust pipe wrap from the
local auto parts. It cost about $40 but should last. It also should be
enough to make about 3 or 4 applications.
A friend has it on his pipes and it has been there about a year and
looks brand new. Of course his pipes do not leak.
