    From: "James, Clive R" <clive.james@uk.bp.com>
I scanned and uploaded the a doc to the 'files' section of the Yahoo group, file is called LAA Cooler Safety spot. I'm afraid I don't have access to a PDF writer at the moment so it's a bit blurred as I cobbled it together into a word Doc I understand it was on a 3300 Jabiru, the cooler failed a few minutes after the first time the aircraft flew with it. The previous cooler leaked after about 350 hours. The statement made by 'B' below isn't quite true; 'the outer plates bulge due to poor manufacturing technique', let's be clear this is what is supposed to have happened in the case of the single failed cooler that was investigated by the UK AAIB. Supposition that all Earls coolers are manufactured badly is at best a little harsh, at worst it is defamatory. It is my belief bulging Earls coolers are caused by fatigue, fatigue caused by pressure fluctuations, pressure fluctuations developed in the Jabiru oil system. I saw a bulging Earls cooler on a 3300 two weeks ago, about 350 hours, not leaking though. The numbers are something like: tested to 11 bar, operating at 4.5 bar so why else should a cooler fail or bulge? When there is a failure of this sort it is important to get to the root cause, stopping when you think you have the issue sorted can put you in a disadvantaged position, or a field. I believe the root cause of Earls coolers failing on Jabiru engines is pressure fluctuations. 'B' is right to suggest that anyone who has an Earls cooler should check it, in fact anyone with an oil cooler should check it as I believe most Jabiru engines have pressure fluctuations. Positech coolers seem to be tolerant of the Jabiru oil system, looking at the website they seem to manufacture industrial coolers for plant where as Earls seem to be automotive. Positech coolers are unfortunately not a good shape for many cowlings. >From what I can gather, Jabiru in Australia use an hydraulic cooler for a auto transmission, not as efficient in heat transfer but robust from a pressure perspective. WOW! Can someone post pictures of this oil cooler failure? I am very interested in seeing the failure and its location. Also, what material is the cooler made from? Usually it is a brass frame and channels with aluminum fins between the channels. List, I made it up to the hangar today and put the ram air ducts back on the engine and ran it up and down the taxi way until the oil was 120 deg. Brought it into the hangar and burned my fingers getting the plugs out. Guess what - Pete you were right. the compression came up into the mid 70's on all the cylinders that were down. Thanks Pete Bobby Jab 3300 125 hrs. Do Not Archive ----- Original Message -----
