Subject: | Re: exhaust system modification |
I built a pair of muffs for a friends' 3300 in his Waiex. I made the
front "bulkhead" for the muff behind all the factory welds so no
chance of a leaky weld admitting CO into the cabin. Making that
bulkhead was a BITCH! It involved cutting a 3-lobe hole into a piece
of stainless steel, and cutting and fitting, cutting and fitting
until it finally fit. I don't know how well they worked, because
another person suggested that they might be the reason that his
engine...brand new and not broken in yet... was overheating (the jury
is still out on that call), so he took them off. But here are
pictures of what I did.

Please be very careful of anything that will introduce Carbon Monoxide into the
cockpit. The Jab 3300 on my airplane has 6 built in leaks at the joints between
the pipes and muffler. It was very hard to seal the firewall positively against
leaks. Even one small leak can be disastrous. In straight and level flight
I did not have a problem BUT while circling a friends hangar about 3 times (
high angle of attack and 85 MPH ) my CO card turned very black ( indicating imminent
death ) and I got a terrible headache. Please be sure your connections
to and from the cabin heat are sealed. I found a very small opening in the factory
fast build fuselage just below the lower right engine mount on three 601's.
I have since sealed the exhaust joints and firewall and had no further problem
but still do not trust them not to leak.
The very inexpensive CO monitor my have save me.

I have also experienced CO2 in the cockpit from leaky jab exhaust, but
nothing to do with the heat muff.
My plan is to use a muff that sits on a clean piece of pipe away from any
welds- and then ducts uncontaminated air.

Subject: | VP Props on 3300 |
I'm doing some research on my Europa with Jabiru 3300 to try and improve
both economy and performance.
Currently my A/C does 118kias at 2850RPM burning 27 litres per hour. (at
sea level)
I think it can be leaned out a bit to improve the economy but we haven't
tried yet.
What are people's thoughts on fitting a VP Prop like Airmaster 332? I'm
wondering if this would help to either improve the cruise speed, or achieve
the same speed with a lower RPM=8A and achieve a shorter takeoff run too.
Am I barking up the wrong tree?
