The FAA does indeed issue AD's on Rotax type certified engines, there just aren't that many out there. Most are in TC'd motorgliders. I have a certified 912s in my Super Ximango. I bought my Ximango in '07 and there have been 3 AD's on the engine since, only one of which applied to my engine and it was a minor inspection. The only difference between the Rotax TC'd engines and the non-TC'd engines is paperwork. Otherwise, they are identical. The SB's apply to all engines within the notated serial number range provided with the SB. Overall, the 912s has been a pretty good engine, provided you keep the carbs balanced. They actually do a pretty good job of documenting issues, provided you can read and understand cryptic Austrian....
