Subject: | fuel pump push rod dimensions? |
Greetings... I need to either fabricate or purchase a fuel pump push rod
for a 3300a s.n. 1054 I see in the manual that it's length should be
72.3-72.8 mm. If someone reading this has one handy, could you mic it for
me and tell me the diameter? My best guess so far is 0.316, based on an 'O'
drill bit shank, but I don't know exactly how much clearance is called for.
Thanks!

According to the overhaul manual (JEM0001-4, page 96) there are two
different types of fuel pump, each requiring a different pushrod length.
Check carefully.

Thanks, Clive! 8mm O-1 drill rod is easily available, do you think this
temper would be correct for this application? BTW, 8mm is actually 0.315
(0.314961 to be exact). Would you have any reservations about fabricating
versus purchasing the Jabiru part?

Noted, thanks. The length I gave pertains to my type 1 pump (with the cast
emblems. Rob, would you have any reservations fabricating this rod (versus
purchasing fom Jabiru) ? Using O-1 temper 8mm drill rod?

The pump I measured was from 3300 ser no 1460, the later type as far as
I can see as the gaskets on my old 2200 are different.

Frankly I wouldn't do it. I do not know what material is being used in
the factory push rod. I wouldn't take chances, as you simply do not know
what long term effect using any arbitrary material can have on the cam
lobe. Also, the pushrod is a fairly tight fit through the crankcase.
Using the wrong material with different heat expansion and/or different
surface roughness might cause it to seize.
Play it safe, get the part from Jabiru.

I think that's probably good advice, Rob. And I think I'll take it. ;')
