Thank you for your very inclusive response to my question. 
I am sending you a photo of what my friend found in his 3300 at 107 hrs. 
The carbon build up was way up into the intake manifold. 
I did not know about the shorter push rods. 
Please let us know how everything works out with this arrangement.
