Subject: JabiruEngine-List: compression
While doing my "Condition" inspection I found that #3 cylinder had dropped to 56
/ 80 on the differential compression gauge ( engine warm ). The other five were
72, 74, and 76 average. The leak is through the rings because I can hear it
in the Crankcase breather line to the catch can. The next day ( engine cold
) I put a pressure gauge on the cylinders and spun the engine with the starter.
All cylinders were up to 90 psi or above including the #3.
The engine is not using oil excessively ( about one to two ounces per hour ) and
the oil is clean - about the color of maple syrup after 25 hrs on it. I sprayed
all the cylinders with Sea Foam Deep Creep and am letting it sit until I
get back there to run it and check differential compression again.
Has anyone dealt with this problem or know how to fix. I plan on flying it for
a for an hour or two and try the differential compression test again.
Thanks for any input.

Be careful with oil additives.=C2-=C2- For example, Avblend is not reco
mmended as it dissolves some of the sealants used between the case halves,
etc. I don't know about Sea Foam Deep Creep.=C2-Regards,

So, it was recommended to me to run the engine up in rpm fairly frequently to get
the cylinders hot Enough to keep things clean. (Burning off carbon)
Just my 2 cents

when doing the compression test, with the differential gauges, hang onto
the prop firmly move it back off of tdc and then pull it forward again
toward tdc.The rings act a little like wiper blades do but need to seal
in the groves and rocking a little promotes that action

I just ran the engine for about 5 minutes today without the cowl.
Did a differential compression test and #3 was back up to 72 / 80.
The soaking with Sea Foam Deep Creep ( Since Saturday ) worked though I could
still hear some air escaping thru the rings at the oil catch can.
Last week I had never heard of Sea Foam and tomorrow morning I am picking up 2
cans from the Auto Parts store.
One for home and one for the hangar.
Thanks to the guys that responded.

Running a Jabiru engine without the cowl on is a very risky proposition. More
than one person has trashed their engine doing just that. CHT's must be watched
carefully;airflow over the fins is a must.
If SeaFoam loosened the rings, then that might be a sign of an overheated cylinder.
Just my opinion.
