Hi All
just a short note.- This last week I spent at the EAD show in Brasil wher
e the company I work for Introduced their new plane called the Volare.- T
he plane was a mock up but we are working on the molds and will start produ
cing parts soon.- Its a fourplace that is a big departure from the KiS Cr
uiser.--Larger and more aerodynamic looking.- When somebody uploads a
picture on my computer I will send it along.-It generated a lot of inter
est.
Experimental aviation here is pretty big with a lot of local LSA type being
designed and built and one high wing four place that I saw.- here their
experimental catagory is very simular to the states but most planes are bui
lt by builder assist companies.- They have several that are relativly big
and also set up booths at the show.- The EAD show is a four day event wi
th the first days for just businesses and then the normal population.- Th
e show was held on the field where Embrear manufactures some of their bugge
r planes so the participated also. They flew their EMB 195 and several othe
rs including the Phenom 100 and 300 There was quite a turnout.- They had
airshows Sat. & Sunday.

Good move.
I made another attempt to create a viewable copy of the Julian Bone KIS TR-
1 airflow tuft testing DVD tonight and I think that I have succeeded. If yo
u will email me your snail mail address I will mail that copy to you.
If you have a problem viewing it -- I used Windows Media viewer -- email me
and if needed we'll get together by phone and see if we can not make it vi
ewable to you.

You can see the placement of these vortex generators on Cirrus airplanes by
going to this web site and watching closely as the pictures flow by:
http://cirrusaircraft.com/
They are definitely placed well below a forward extended wing chord line.
Remember that they are supposed to do their job at higher angles of attack.
2) "......... solve the problem ......." and "........ a perfect solution

There are two separate, but somewhat interrelated problems, as far as I can
tell, that don't lend themselves to just one solution:
A) Inadequate pitch authority from a too small elevator -- to be solved or
improved by making the elevator larger and / or vortex generators on the
lower side of the horizontal stabilizer.
B) An intermittent burble flowing back to the horizontal tail surfaces from
the pinched in wing to fuselage juncture. To be solved by a larger radius
juncture or vortex generators mounted on the fuselage.

OC, With that information, I am guessing that would be placed them about
four inches in front of the wing and a little above the extended chord line,
right? It will be interesting to hear how they work. I hope they solve the
problem once and for all. I believe this would be the fourth possible
soultion: 1) extended elevator, 2) 8" radius on wing fairing, 3) small
vortex generators on under side of the elevator, and 4) the four inch vortex
generator on side of fuselage. There has to be a perfect solution among
these. I wish Vance Jaqua were alive to enjoy the work everyone is doing on
the low speed stability problem. He would enjoy this. He was very
impressed with Julian Bone's fairing solution. The vortex solutions seem
easier to accomplish. Makes me wish I still had my KIS so I could play
with these solutions. Keep up the good work guys. Larry

gear I am going to larger tubing but need to know how hard did you make

I probably wasn't making much more than 125 HP on that flight since I had t
he power pulled pretty far back-due to the engine running hot.- I shoul
d be done with cooling fixes this week and go for another flight next week
hopefully with a well cooled engine.

Just wanted to let you know that when Lyle Hendricks converted my airfoil
shaped spring / shock nose gear strut to a round tube that it was heat
treated on 11/14/01.
It went through: Normalize at 1650 degrees; Autenitie** at 1575 degrees; and
Temper at 1050 degrees. Rockwell C hardness was 28-31.
Please see the attached picture.

**PS: My knowledge of heat treatment is pretty limited. This term may really
be austenite as austenitie is something fairly exotic. Maybe Lyle can
clarify this.
