Hello Rich,
A Zap flap is a split flap where the hinge point also moves aft. Here is a diagram: http://www.answers.com/topic/zap-flaps
A well done slotted flap is about 5% better than a plain flap (like on the TR1),
a split flap is about 10% better than a slotted flap and a Zap flap is about
10% better than a split flap. On the TR1 a Zap flap would reduce stall and landing
speed about 5+ knots.
A Zap flap is about the same as a well done single slot Fowler flap. Both are
about the same complexity to make but the Zap has nothing critical. With a Fowler
the slot size and shape is critical and if not done correctly is not as good
as a Zap.
