Hi Graham...
-
My IO-360 weighs about 300 pounds.- The angle valve engines are-little
heavier.- The 320 is 20-30 pounds lighter.- Lycoming's website has a ch
art that shows the wieghts of all their engines.
-
My engine makes 220+ HP at sea level, but I don't normally operate the engi
ne over the 180HP-factory rating.- I usually takeoff and climb at 25" M
P which is roughly 180HP.- I look at it as a 'turbo normalized' engine wi
thout the turbo.- I built the engine for cross country performance at alt
itude, so I'm not really looking at power at sea level as much as power at
altitude.- I'm using dual P-mags for ignition and am very happy with them
.- The engine doesn't need any electrical power from the airplane once it
's running which was important to me.-
-
I think it would be hard to beat a mid time used-320 with a top overhaul
with ported heads and high compression pistons.-

-Scott ...-- thx for ur reply ..was really looking for ur actual engi
ne weight ...- My previous Subaru engine (156hp) gave good performance 14
0kts cruise and 1000ft per min climb @ 100kts .... but was working the engi
ne pretty hard ...so went to the ej25 engine to get some extra performance
gains at the same time running the engine a little easier ... inlet valve f
ailure is still unexplained .
-
Only got- 5 hrs from that engine but was getting 2000 fpm climb etc which
was great ... ( bought that engine from a Helicopter build guy who gave up
on his project ... but i checked with his engine rebuild shop-and all se
emed ok )
-
Currant engine plan is ... I have a turbo subaru sti block that produces 27
0 hp in stock form ....i'm wanting to de-rate it by running without the tur
bo at about 180 -200hp ...- Hung up with finding a shop that will blue pr
int the crank with-opened-bearing clearances to race specs ..the local
shop only does big block engines and another good shop won't touch an aircr
aft job ... so having to to look away from home .. grrr
-
I like ur idea of upping the HP of say the lyc 320 but .... i'm trying to g
o de-rated rather than the other way ...
-
Are u running Mags ..or have u gone electronic ..?

Hello,
-
I have carbon wings, cowl and control surfaces, a parallel valve IO-360, an
d a wood/composite prince prop and it weighs about 850 lbs.-
-
-If I were looking for the same performance as the subaru-I'd buy a mid
to high time-O-235 and pull the cylinders and have the heads ported and
put in high compression pistons.- You could get at least 130HP out of it.
- I'd recommend lycon in CA-for the head-work and pistons.-
-
You could do the same with a 320 and get 180-190 HP.- My "180 HP" 360 did
227 HP on the test cell with ported heads and 10:1 pistons and some other
minor stuff.- It's a great engine, but cooling it at high power has been
a big project.
-
The 360 requires major cowl work for induction and increase cooling and it
just bearly fits under the cowl.- I have about 1/8" on each side.-

Hey there Scott,
-------------------------
---- I have the Matco brakes ..so thx will check out the 'kit' ...
- Back last April-while test flying a rebuilt Subaru transplant ..a inl
et valve head broke off and caused a-forced landing ....have since been h
ung up with finding an engine build shop that i'm confidant with ..-to bu
ild another Subaru engine -that i'd fly behind ......Am looking at a mid
time IO-360 .... Can u tell me the weight of urs (all up complete with acce
ssories but no prop )- ...
-
Would be a big turn around for me to go this way .. but am presently 'looki
ng' at all possibilities ...!!
-
Cheers
Graham- (TR1 # 80 )
