A nice RV9 was displayed at Sebring as a Light Sport airplane.[wood prop,no wheel fairings, etc.]with a 120kt cruise. As a starter to thoughts re the TR1[forget the regulation interpretations for now]how about a simple new larger fabric /wood wing designed by Rich,Mark, and others. I am listening Ted PS The Viking/Honda engine package for a 110 HP engine looks like real competition for Rotax.

Hi Ted, When I was working at Tri-R I did a preliminary design for an LSA based on the TR1. Mostly longer wing and bigger tail if I recall correctly. It could be have been done fairly easy using the same construction methods as the TR1. I also did an LSA design for a Chinese company that was built and flown. In any case I do not think wood and fabric are the way to go. For the same strength wood is about 3 times the weight of steel. Steel is about 2 times the weight of aluminum. Aluminum is about 2 times the weight as fiberglass. So why use wood? Of course carbon is about 3 times the strength as fiberglass but costs more. If a few people are really interested in making an LSA version I could design and build a (full) wing kit and tail extension kit to make it meet LSA regulations.
