One was .040 inches thick and the other was .060 inches thick. I picked the one that seemed to give me the right combination of stiffness and flexibility. Either one would have worked -- I can't remember which thickness I used -- still have the other full sheet stored someplace. I used some large sheets of cardboard to develop a pattern by trial and error. The glare shield curved front edge is wedged between the inner fuselage surface and some epoxied in place wedge openings. The aft end projects past the top of the instrument panel 3 to 4 inches and is held to the top of the instrument panel by velcro strips. The shield is painted with flat, light gray paint (no reflections). The aft edge is covered with push on self grip edging similar to this: http://www.mcmaster.com/#trim-molding/=b24yv5 'OC' Baker Says: "The best investment we can make is the time and effort to gather and understand knowledge." =========================================================== ----- Original Message ----- From: "ALFRED ROSA" Sent: Wednesday, February 16, 2011 9:45 AM Subject: KIS-List: Dust shield > Can anyone share ideas on how they fashioned the instrument panel dust > shield? > > I have some ideas but want to see if I missed something. > > Al Rosa > ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 11:12:21 AM PST US From: Scott Stearns Subject: Re: KIS-List: Dust shield I did something similar to OC.- I build a cardboard base and used pour fo am to make a block of foam.- Then I carved it in a basically stright line from the top of the panel to the window.- The did the normal thing of co vering it with masking tape then plastic tape and did a 3 ply layup.- Als o, I did a release off the top of the panel and glassed that piece on-to the front of the glare shield so it stuck out in front of the panel a coupl e inches to shade the panel. - My interior guy made my seat cushions and he used the same leather like mat erial to cover the glare shield.- He put a thin layer of soft-foam on t he top of the glare shild and wrapped it around the front to make a soft ed ge.- He didn't bond the leather to the glare shield.- He just let-it float and it looks great concidering how wavey my original part-is.- The glare shild sits on a couple of short piece of pop sickle stick at the front (just like Rich's airplane) and has a couple pieces of velcro on top of the panel to hold it in place.- Seems to work great. - Scott --- On Wed, 2/16/11, ALFRED ROSA wrote: From: ALFRED ROSA Subject: KIS-List: Dust shield Can anyone share ideas on how they fashioned the instrument panel dust shie ld?
