Hi Ted, I agree with Scott. Higher compression and porting will not only give you more peak power (not that you are interested in more power) but also help efficiency. I would also ceramic coated the piston tops, ceramic coat the ports and low friction coat the piston sides. On top of this I would also go to an electronic ignition. I think you will see a much bigger change in efficiency with this than with just changing from one type of carb to another type of carb. Even just going to the electronic ignition will produce a bigger fuel savings than changing the carb type. Real port fuel injection would be better but is expensive. Keep in mind that you can always throttle back with any carb. Mark -----Original Message----- From: Scott Stearns Sent: Aug 16, 2011 1:26 AM Subject: Re: KIS-List: DErating a 0 320? If it were me I would pull the cylinders and have the heads ported and install 10:1 compression pistons. You would end up with 185-190 HP peak and the engine would be significantly more efficient at cruise power. Ted I agree with Scott and Mark except one item.- Anything you do wil cost mo ney.- Is this money spent wisely? Are you doing a rebuild anyway.- How much do you fly in a year.- Say you fly 100 hours and your fuel savings i s $1 per hour..- It would take 2000 hours to recoupe the 2000 dollar mod. - Throttle back for tool around the patch and have fun flying without the fus and down time Rich --- On Tue, 8/16/11, Mark Kettering <mantafs@earthlink.net> wrote: From: Mark Kettering <mantafs@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: KIS-List: DErating a 0 320? I think for about $2000 net of selling the parts you could go to 10:1 pistons, port the heads and go to dual Emags assuming your comfortable doing the work yourself. Some mechanics will supervise your work for a reasonable cost which is the way i would go with my current skill set. I bet you would save about 1 gal per hour in cruise and have a 20-30 HP reserve above the normal rating at sea level. I normally do not run above 25 inches which keeps the engine at or below its rated power. I run lean of peak with my 360 with this set up, but only at less than 20 inches of MP which is wide open at 10,000 feet or above. I get 170 KTAS at 8 gallons per hour at 10000 feet, even a bit better at 13500. Like Rich said you have to balance the cost and benefit. You save gas but also add value and performance to the airplane. I really think a used 320 or 540 with these mods is the best value for a light airplane engine.
