Subject: | IO-240 wood prop |
Hello all,
This was new information to me and I thought I would pass it along, FYI.
Long story short. After my last flight I found a light film of black
dust on the cowl and windscreen. I found it was emanating from the
spinner at the prop blade cut outs. I found the prop bolts not to
torque, only about two hrs. since re torque at annual. Two of the bolts
were tight to remove and one broke in the drive lug thread, while trying
to remove it.
I bought the hub from Woolfter Saber Manufacturing back in 1996. It is
now Saber Manufacturing owned by Sam Tilleman. I spoke to Sam today
about needing to send my hub in to have the 3/8" Threaded Drive Lugs
replaced. When I told him that my engine was the Cont. IO-240 he
suggested up sizing the lugs to 7/16". He said the high impulse of the
IO-240 was hard on the 3/8" bolts and he has seen others with the same
problem. Sam also said that Diamond has modified all their Katanas that
are using the 240's, for this reason.
Another possible problem for me was improper re torque technique. The
proper way is to loosen a bolt at least one full turn then torque it to
the final torque value.(I was just re torquing) Proceed doing the rest
using the star pattern.
I know Rich about lost his prop when he flew in to Copperstate in 1995,
I think that was the year. Maybe this was a contributing factor. (
Rich, If you read this, I hope you are feeling well! update?)
Hope this might help someone, Tim
