Hello All,
I talked with Mr. Barton about his KIS TR-1C and his story is an interesting one.
Apparently a good friend of his, an ophthalmologist by trade, went for a ride
with Rich and bought a kit in late 1993 or early 1994. He said the serial
number was #068 or # 069. I checked my list of builders and owners I have been
collecting and #069 belongs to Stephen Settle so he must have #069. The good
doctor had practices set up here in the U.S. and another in Lithuania. Somewhere
along the line the Doctor met what he felt was a competent crew capable of
assembling his KIS kit. The kit was shipped to Lithuania and building commenced.
The aircraft was pretty much completed including a stack of nice radios but
then the airplane was put into storage where pieces of it became missing, including
the radios. The airplane was shipped back to the U.S. where in was in
the hands of another builder in Claremont, CA; here nothing was ever done to the
airplane. Now almost twenty years later the Doctor offered it to Mr. Barton
and he accepted it.
Now Mr. Barton needs to finish of the last details to get it in the air. There
are no flaps, ailerons, or wing tips and somehow he needs to fabricate replacements.
Other than these parts the airplane is complete. The wingtips are no great
loss but the factory tips were better than nothing. Replacing the wingtips,
flaps and ailerons will a big undertaking with out a lot of composite experience.
He needs some ideas about how to construct the flaps and ailerons. I do
not see any reason they can not be built with wet lay-ups (the original prototype
N93RT had flaps and ailerons that had solid foam cores but were replaced in
1992 with prepreg skins). I have sent him hard copy of the wing manual so he
can get and idea of the task ahead. Hopefully the engineers Scott and or Mark
can provide some suitable input. Mr. Barton has a friend that will be doing the
composite work need to complete the project. The airplane has a Lycoming in
it but there is no ID plate on the motor. It is either an O-235 or an O-290.
The airplane is currently mostly in primer or unfinished surfaces.
Mr. Barton is a young 79 year old living on an air park in White Hills, AZ. He
is a very experienced pilot with a hanger full of airplane projects. He loves
the old tail draggers an to name just a few in the stable are a: Baby Ace; Bellanca
14-13, up graded motor and electric motors being installed to replace the
hand crack that requires more than 60 cranks to raise or lower the landing gears;
Two Stinsons, one he just ferried back from New Jersey; and at least 3 or
4 other projects in pieces and parts. He is intrigued by the KIS and the tail
wheel is right down his alley.
Mr. Barton is not computer literate in any fashion. He is analog. A friend of his
has been putting post up on his behalf (he will be away for the next 2 weeks).
Please feel free to call him or send along anything you think he may need.
