Keith,
Sorry to hear about that. A local FBO had one in stock so I wasn't down
long. They just cost to damn much. If you price a new one you will be glad
to get a rebuilt one :-). You might check with a mechanic about the
possibility of converting to the old geared system. Maybe OC has an idea if
that is possible or affordable.
Good luck, Tim

Tim
I have started to look into the possibilities of switching to the old style
mechanical coupling, But I wonder if there were any good reasons why TCM
switched to the Elastomeric type,Did they have in field failures, or was it
simply to protect a 600$ alternator with a 2000$ coupling .
also I am wondering why it failed ? My alternator is spinning freely so it
wasn't due to this,

Just spoke with Drakes representative and he said the most common cause of
failure was too high a load on the alternator immediately after start up
since this is when the alternator is running slow, Or if a large load is
suddenly put on the alternator in flight . He said they get a few in for
refurbishment every week, particularly in the summer when owners are
switching on the airco before start up ( are they battery operated ? ) ,
Clearly this is not my problem ( particularly in the cold Europe this
summer we have had ) but this has got me thinking and maybe its the lithium
Ion battery I installed earlier this year , immediately after startup it
draws very large currents which drop almost immediately ( these batteries
go from zero to fully charged in 15 mins ). It may have nothing at all to
do with this.
