That is amazing the door stayed attached to the airplane most TR-1 door openings ended with missing doors. The door opening in flight problem is not uncommon. At least 5 TR-1s (including yours and the original factory TR-1C), and 3 TR-4, have had doors open in flight. The original design with its spring loaded tapered latching pins do not always hit the mark, and when they do it is not the most secure arrangement. The Lyle Hendrick latch (still available, with a version used on many RVs) is a much better design, and features a more positive latch with straight pins mechanically pushed into place. Some builders have modified the design like Scott Sterns, his TR-1C features a single center latch holding system that is simple and very effective (Pics at Robert Reeds website Google - Reed KIS). Should you decide to repair the door frame, as Scott mentioned the window and all other KIS windows, TR-1, and TR-4, are still available from Aircraft Windshield Co. in Southern California (Ruth 562-430-8108). The cost for a side window is somewhere between $400 and $500 plus shipping. The windows are molded from 1/8 inch stock, available in clear, and light grey. I imagine the window frame is cracked at the hinges and at least two other spots around the frame. Even with limited composite experience the frame could be brought back to life. As for other doors there are currently 3 TR-1s totaled out that I know of but your best bet would be the Huntington KIS extensively rebuilt by Larry David that crashed in 2006. The airplane was bought earlier this year by TR-1C owner Bruce Barton in Whitehall, AZ. He bought the airplane to get parts he needed to finish his airplane. There is a chance the door you need may be available. I must mention that the airplane was owned by a salvage company for many years and may have been stored outside. The window may not be serviceable. I believe Larrys rebuild featured his own latch mods (see pics a Robert Reeds website). Feel free to call Mr. Barton at 702-596-6860. I am sure hed enjoy hearing from another KIS pilot. I have you on KIS list as owning the TR-1 built by Jon Elissade, Powered by a Lycoming O-290. Is there any chance you know the serial number to the airplane?
