Jersy what is on the panel, are there any vacuum Instruments, and what radios
are installed? Were you always running with the Ellison TBI, or is it a recent
addition? What prop were you running before the MT?
I did study the pictures more closely. The upper corner of the fuselage aft of
the firewall really took a hit with the outer skin, core, and almost the inner
skin burned through. The lower fuselage where the lower landing gear bracket
attached must have burned away. The fuselage under the main spar looks very suspect,
you can almost see the spar outline in the charred surface.
I checked out some of the other components on the web. The MT prop is very dear
indeed, listed at Vans for a cool $12,350 USD. It is 72 inch in diameter, is
electrically actuated, and will cost you 49 pounds. A six year standard rebuild
runs $3,300 to $3,500 USD (saw one rebuild at $5,000). The blades are very special
too a metal core with carbon fiber laminated with a metal mesh for lighting
strikes, and a special copper coating to discharge static. The protective
electroplated metal leading edges are very high tech, and are really neat. Repairing
the blades is probably not recommended. I imagine the cost of a new set
would run near $6,000 USD. The prop hub was burning for a while so I would
think that any electrical coils in the mechanism are now compromised. The cost
of the rebuild, the blades, and possibly other components would probably be near
the cost of a new prop.
The Franklin 220 hp. engine is a very popular replacement for the old Continental
O-300s. They do duty in many Alaskan bush planes. They seem to hold up, and
are known for smooth operation. Cylinders are steel lined cast aluminum. Dry
weight is 297 plus everything else. Installed on the TR-4 with the MT tips 400
pounds. Ouch! Some people love the Franklin, and have learned its quarks, others
have no love for them, but maybe only because they have not been exposed to
them. On the down side there are few people that work on them, and some parts
are hard to come by. The factory has a website, and there is a USA dealer in
Ft. Collins, CO. This engine would need the accessories, wiring, and soft parts
replaced, Additionally I would worry the case might be warped from the heat
how hot did it get? I think the engine cost about $15,000 to $17,000 when this
one was purchased.
