Subject: | Re: IO-240 BxB Engine Mount Bushings |
As far as I can remember (but it is more than 15 years ago), the engine
mount parts that came with the engine (IO-240-A) contained some pieces of
rubber hose to slide onto the spacer and between the rubber bushings (and
washers). Looking like the aircraft spruce O-200 picture on your last link.
I see no reason for having anything else than some rubber hose there.
I am still on these original parts.

Your approach is very innovative and similar to the rubber donut gear
cushions in some Mooney and Beechcraft (Sierra) airplanes. See here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechcraft_Musketeer
I=99ll probably try cutting up some rubber hose material to get
the tubular elastomeric parts for the small CM (Continental Motors)
engine mounts. See reference number 1 in this schematic:

Subject: bushings
OC,
I used hockey pucks for my Variviggen's gear cushions and they worked
like a charm. I would like to suggest this for you mounts. Take one on
a drill press, preferably a bridgeport, drill your center hole. Then
chuck up a hole saw thats oversize of the smaller cylinder area. Cut
that one out. Then put a bolt, watered up, tightened down. Chuck this
up in your drill press and turn it down with a flat file against it
bringing it down to diameter size. Next make cut and make the larger
cylinder the same way. File them down to thickness on the drill press.
When the center holes were cut make them oversize to accommodate a steal
tube that the mounting bolts would go in so both hockey puck pieces
would mount on. You could file this, turning on the drill press, to the
exact size that could be forced in the mounting holes. When pulled down
this would further fill the hole and for a tight fit.
These pucks are made with fiber that don't come apart. I would think
they would outlast almost anything.
Another thought,
Jesse

Hello Keith, Thank you for the response and pictures. You wrote:
1) "The 530740's look in really good condition so i am not so worried
about those but my 638225's are not
looking so good."
That has also been my experience, but some of my 638225's are completely
shredded / destroyed in the removal process. My plan is to install the
638225's (if I do reinstall any) with a coating of Dow DC-4.
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/dc4.php
I think that both the 530740's and 638225's tend to regain their shape after
removal if they wait around for a few days. There is also the issue of both
of those elastomers becoming hardened with the passage of time and losing
their vibration absorption ability even when sitting on the shelf. But since
the 638225's start out being too soft in the first place I don't see that as
a problem.
2) "... i intend to replace them this year ...." and ".... where did you
eventually get the 638225's from ?"
I have ordered three 638225's from Aircraft Spruce (were not in stock --
coming from some un identified location) at $69.70 USD each and the last two
that Skygeek had in stock for $60.28 USD each. See here for their present
out of stock status:
http://www.skygeek.com/continental-motors-638225-bushing.html
No 638225's have arrived yet. BUT the eight 6 inch pieces of hose that I
ordered from McMaster Carr have arrived today and I am very pleased (Thank
you Bill Schertz). I received two pieces each of:
8637K131 75A Durometer; 86805K53 75A Durometer; 5546T53 60A Durometer; and
87235K11 40A Durometer.
http://www.mcmaster.com/
My intent is to see if I can cut pieces of the first three into suitable
lengths (approximately 1 and 1/2 inches) and bore them out to 1/2 inch inner
diameter (to fit over the center metal spacer) to use as replacements for
the 638225's. (I think the two 40A Durometer pieces are too soft.)
3) "... and have you also decided to replace the 530740's as well ?"
Yes, I have ordered and received eight 5830740's from Aircraft Spruce, along
with a 1/4 inch thick piece of aluminum bar stock that I plan to make shims
from to shim forward the bottom crankcase mounting legs (if needed) in order
to move the spinner upward. I already have in hand several shims of thinner
thickness that I have created through the years.

OC,
I attach a couple of pictures of my mounts . The 530740's look in
really
good condition so i am not so worried about those but my 638225's are not
looking so good . as a temp measure I swapped the mounts around ( top
mounts went bottom ) and the engine was looking a bit higher up . i intend
to replace them this year and had assumed Aircraft specialities had them in
stock , so its good that you told me they do not
(See attached file: IMG_4181.JPG)(See attached file: IMG_4203.JPG)
where did you eventually get the 638225's from ? and have you also
decided to replace the 530740's as well ?
