OC, Some answers to your questions. *1) Why did you switch from the vertical card compass to the S.I.R.S.?* The old vertical card had started sticking so it would not swing smoothly. After researching the issue I went with the S.I.R.S. since it has fewer "moving parts" and seemed to have much better reliability. *2) The red things are locks on the door supports?* They are actually strut "locks" I fabricated after getting my head hit by the door several times in gusty wind conditions. It is just a thin piece of aluminum rolled around, until it can snap around the strut, and painted red. They are very easy to snap on and take off so now it doesn't matter how strong the struts are. *3) You have a portable GPS and an iPad on RAM mounts in the cockpit?* Yes I do. I fabricated the RAM mount for the tablet out of a piece of aluminum and attached it to the co-pilot side. Then I mounted a RAM mount for the tablet on the aluminum. It is right next to a dual USB charging port and the audio input jack for the audio panel. This way the tablet charges during flight and I can listen to music on our long flights. The portable is a GARMIN Aera. I fabricated an instrument hole cover plate and mounted the AERA on the plate. The AERA receives cross-feed data from the Garmin 430W so I don't have to enter a flight plan into multiple places. I can also run my autopilot from either the Garmin 430W or the Garmin AERA via a two position switch you can see below the AERA and above the red mixture knob . *4) What is the instrument immediately above the Trio autopilot control head and what provides the inputs to that instrument?* It is a VAL INS-429 which serves as my 2nd VOR/ILS/LOC/MB receiver. It can also display whatever I have selected on my Garmin 430W. It works VERY well. Besides being an excellent IFR navigation backup, now it is very easy to do my 30day VOR checks and stay legal. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/valINS429.php *5) What is the little square device just below the airflow output on the far right of the panel?* That is a Guardian Carbon Monoxide detector. It is connected to my SkyView system and provides both an aural and visual warning if it detects a high carbon monoxide level. It also works EXCELLENT for marking things/incidents that are recorded on my engine monitoring system without having to later spend hours searching for the incident. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/pspages/aero35313- 16423-4.php?recfer=10826 *6) What is the red guarded switch by the pilots right knee?* That is my alternate static source selector. It is just a small pneumatic toggle switch with a red switch cover. Raising the red cover and throwing the switch opens the static line to the cabin in case the outside static source becomes clogged. https://www.valvesonline.com.au/pneumatics/manual-valves/ tog32-m5-m5-32-way-brass-toggle *7) How did you come by the carbon fiber flap sector cover? Are there any more available?* I actually just covered the existing aluminum one with a layer of fiberglass, then put a layer of carbon on top and clear coated it. I did the same to the lower instrument panel, the passenger area conduit cover and the baggage compartment conduit cover. There is nothing structural about it, just made it look good and it matches my new carbon fiber spinner. I hope this answers your questions. PS That was an older picture but you could see the compass in it. Here is a more recent picture with additional "stuff". 1) WALMART kitchen timer with BIG numbers for timing approaches. 2) MASTER WARNING indicator lights above each display. 3) Electronic Magneto (P-Mag) test buttons on the Pilot side of the panel. BTW that photo was taken in real IMC conditions as I was being vectored for the ILS approach in to Havana, Cuba. You can see the VAL INS-429 displaying the ILS data in addition to the Garmin 430W on my SkyView screen. Times like this is where having that extra redundancy makes you feel a little less concerned with the situation you are in. :) On Tue, Nov 15, 2016 at 11:06 AM, Galin Hernandez wrote: > OC, Some answers to your questions. > > *1) Why did you switch from the vertical card compass to the S.I.R.S.?* > The old vertical card had started sticking so it would not swing smoothly. > After researching the issue I went with the S.I.R.S. since it has fewer > "moving parts" and seemed to have much better reliability. > > *2) The red things are locks on the door supports?* > They are actually strut "locks" I fabricated after getting my head hit by > the door several times in gusty wind conditions.
