One thing that I am not clear on is how the hinge actually failed. Did the w
orn tabs all fail or did the loosened hinge pin fall out?
I know that I was paranoid and did an overkill on all of my hinges by doubli
ng the length and additional screws but the idea of just crimping the end to
retain the pins didn=99t appeal to me as being the right choice. I ad
ded a small tab to on end of each hinge with a small hole that a bolt could b
e inserted. Each hinge pin has a 90 degree bend and a loop that aligns with t
he tab. I put a small bolt through with lock nut after installing. I couldn
=99t get the bolt into a couple of them so I used safety wire to tie them
in place. The hinge pins can=99t come out no matter how loose the hin
ge.

This sort of play should really be seen even on a preflight inspection let alone
an annual inspection.

Bob; There was no indication of the actual hinge failing except the insides
being worn out. Then there is the fact the pin was nowhere to be found.
Otherwise the hinge looked normal. It fell out. If it would have been one
long hinge, the entire rudder would have failed catastrophically and I
would have been in real doggie do-do. But since it had two hinges, the
second hinge held long enough to safely land the airplane. That is why I
decided to add a 3rd hinge instead of making one super long hinge.

That is what I suspected, the loosened pin was not locked in and fell out th
e bottom of the hinge. The way the original instructions said to secure the p
in just never seemed right to me.

Disconnect the connection from handle to flap control arm then lower the flaps
by hand until control arms slip out if the channel at end of flaps. Once flaps
are fully down the hinges should be accessible.
(My assumption was manual flaps. In my case I disconnect the flap motor and lower
flaps. )

THANKS! The flap hinges are in excellent shape but, since I have new ones,
I am going to replace them anyways.

For a while there I could not understand the problem.
Then I realised I put nut plates on all my hinges, this makes it a breeze t
o remove and replace them, you only have to get to one side. I put a piece
of weed eater nylon through 2 holes on the hinge and then through the hole
s in the wing and pull it together with one hand and put the screws in with
the other. Also explains why I=99m not in the air yet.
Try these screws https://www.microfasteners.com/fcmxs0808-8-32-x-1-2-t15-10
0-degree-flat-head-6-lobe-drive-machine-screws-stainless.html
Keep well
Mike
