Advisory Circular Info from Advisory Circular 43.13-1B
(AC 43.13 -1B) there is a chart that gives the date mfg., which is denoted
by colored threads in the bungee. (If they are certified bungees) This
code
is listed in Chapter 9, Table 9-1. This chapter also states:
"A rubber shock (bungee) cord for shock absorption must be inspected
for
age, fraying of braided sheath, narrowing (necking) of the cord, and wear at
points of contact with the structure and stretch. If the age of the shock
cord is near 5 years or more, it is advisable to replace it with a new cord.
A
cord that shows other defects should be replaced, regardless of age."
Due to this the color codes are repeated every 5 years. I'll be glad
to
e-mail this code to anybody if they let me know off list. takes a bit of
typing :-)
I have heard of "new" bungee cords ordered and being within a few months of
the 5 year life, so if a certified bungee, check the "date" to insure you
are
getting your money's worth!

Roger, I have the pump just below the header tank. I installed it largely
because of discussion from the list. It is on my pre-takeoff check list,
but not needed in flight. I am embarrassed to tell the number of takeoffs I
have made without the pump on. So as a matter of routine it is not needed.
All of the other guys I fly with - 7 guys, with about 250 hours of long
cross country flights together - don't have the aux pump as they were not
list members when building and hence were not influenced to install it.
They have had no problems in probably three of four thousand cumulative
flight hours.
In short it is a personal choice, in my opinion, based largely on
discussions concerning what might happen and redundancy. I don't recall
ever hearing of a failure of the primary 912 fuel pump. I don't think the
builders manual suggests an aux fuel pump and I personally don't see any
problem in that.

The head pressure is the problem and the fact your carb is higher than your
header tank. If you want all the fuel then you will need a low pressure pump
preferable as close to the header tank as possible. Take a look at my header
tank or Toms on sportflight.

When I wrote the former post re: bungees I left out the most important
membership for builders. In my opinion as a member for well over 30 years it is
the
Experimental Aircraft Association. EAA is made up of and for homebuilders,
from the simplest to the most complex. The association with EAA will give you
most information you can get and a lot of fellowship with fellow builders,
every aircraft has building questions, it doesn't make any difference if it is
a
KitFox, or a Murphy Moose, there are similar problems!
Technical counselors will be available to answer questions, look over your
aircraft with a second set of eyes and the list goes on and on.
If you haven't joined EAA consider it, all information, or where to get it is
available, from the early days to current, which covers lots of aircraft.
Every monthly magazine has information, and it tells where to get the
information you need.

You are exactly right in most high wing aircraft, (homebuilt) it is just up
to you. If the fuel system gravity feeds the correct amount of fuel to the
pump in the extreme nose high position it is an extra. If the fuel flow isn't
quite as much as the engine requires I would consider it a necessity. I don't
recall the amount over the required fuel flow that certified aircraft require.
My standing question
~~BUT is your life any more important when you are flying a certified
aircraft than your own creation?

Yep, that's the place, Torgeir! How about flying our Kitfoxes from there when
we are retired? :-) Notice the large greenhouses, those are the famous
Muchamiel tomatoes, well know in the region. Yes, I know, they write it
Mutxamel but that is the new Valenciano name. Latin America and Spanish
Castilla speak the Spanish you and I learned at school. The rest of Spain, and
since the death of Franco, speak Gallego, Catalan, Valenciano ... and many more
dialects. :-)

Dear fellow Kitfoxer,
This may not be of very much interest for most of you but if you remember that
I came to aviation through simulation and that, one year ago, I was only flying
a virtual Kitfox, then you may wonder how I modelled it.
The answer is borrowed from the Beatles: With a little help from my friends!
To make it even better, I recently measured carefully the section of the wings
of my model 3 and I sent the drawing of it to a French friend, Mathias. He then
compared the profile with several other similar ones. His conclusion - as seen
on this screenshot - is that the NACA 6411 is the closest.

Once used in the flight simulator X-Plane, I find it to be quite close to
reality. A limited comparison, of course, because with the virtual Kitfox I can
do manoeuvres I'll never dream of in the real plane! :-)

I think the point I tried to make is that experience doesn't seem to
indicate that the basic Skystar system is inadequate for the Rotax Series
engines. If it would make someone feel better to do more, that is perfectly
OK, but it is important to consider, aside from experience, all else is
opinion.

Just as an FYI, if you do add an electric "back-up" pump, be sure that
it is a free-flow type so that fuel will flow through it even when the pump
is not running (not all electric pumps free flow). This will make the
installation pretty straight forward.

Thank you for the responses. I have the installation manual and the service bulletin
that shows how each individual bushing assembly goes together. Some of the
bushings are buried pretty deep so what I am looking for are lesson learned,
tricks, disassembly sequence (carbs, muffler, all bushings at once or one at
a time, etc.) from someone who has done this without pulling the engine.

It can be done without pulling the engine. Do you have the engine
installation manual ? You could also refer to the Service Bulletin.. I think

Does anybody know if there is any difference in the Motor mount attach points on
Mod IV, classic IV and Light squared... and is there any differences within
the same model , that is for fuselages for different motors. If someone can easily
measure the distance from the bottom motor mount firewall attach point and
the ground with the fuselage level I'd appreciate it. I'm using a diferent
motor and drive system than the Rotax 912 and need to detemine what size prop
I can swing.

I am
currently running the fuel line from my header tank to the fuel valve in the
console. The manual does not mention anything about installing an electric
fuel pump. Is one not needed? Is the engine driven pump all that is needed?
I am installing the 912s in my plane. Is the added pump for reliability and
safety reasons?............comments

Does anybody know if there is any difference in the Motor mount attach
points on Mod IV, classic IV and Light squared... and is there any
differences within the same model , that is for fuselages for different
motors. If someone can easily measure the distance from the bottom motor
mount firewall attach point and the ground with the fuselage level I'd
appreciate it. I'm using a diferent motor and drive system than the Rotax
912 and need to detemine what size prop I can swing.

I wouldnt recommend it. Although they are very tight to start
with there is still some elasticity. If that is gone or at its limit then
it just breaks.

For Christmas, my grandson wanted a Boomerang that really worked .
I began searching the internet and found a boomerang that is supposed to work and
with it I got a Floppy disk with some interesting info on boomerangs.
I was surprised that the cross section of a boomerang arm is the classic airfoil
shape we are familiar with in our wings and props. I was further surprised
to read about how dihedral affects a boomerang's performance as well as angle
of incidence of the arms and how adding spoilers or varying the CG can affect
performance. Pretty heady stuff, especially when the whole thing started in the
upside-down subcontinent by a group believed, at least by some, to be quite
primitive.

Everyone,
Before we are done discussing the fuel pump issue, I have a questuion.
I'm used to flying G.A. planes and feel very secure with a mechanical fuel
pump and an electric "back-up" pump. However, the VW type IV engine (like
I'm using) never had a mechanical pump, only an electric pump under the
hood. So, am I looking at gravity feed with an electric back-up, or 2
electric pumps with one running constantly??? Both of these options seemed
to put a twinkle in Murphy's eye (I hate it when he does that). Thoughts
anyone? The first one with the right answer wins what's behind door #3.

Is there a way for the novice user to identify various foam, as found
lying around our local EAA Chapter Hangar, etc.? Some may be tempted to
experiment with the hot-wire cutter and mistakenly grab a piece of
polyurethane foam to practice with.
I see that there are several colors of this foam. Is it color coded
for identity?
I need to replace the badly decayed foam ribs in the flaperons of my
KF3. The ribs were melted by gasoline that may seep into the area
through a hinge point. Any recommendations regarding the use of foam in
an area that may get occasional exposure to gasoline? Any suggestions
for a good adhesive to hold foam to an aluminum surface without damaging
the foam or the aluminum? How about the use of spray foam for this
application, being careful not to confine it, allowing for expansion?

It is absolutely NOT polyurethane. Polyurethane will release cyanide
gas if you try to hot wire it. DON'T.
It is Polystyrene foam, trade name Styrofoam by Dow chemical. The
form usually used in homebuilding is PI (Pipe Insulation) Billets, or
FB (Fabrication Billet) or BB (Bouyancy Billets), made by Dow. The BB

thing. The PI's come in 8x16x104 inch blocks, or, lately, 10x20x104.
Don't use white EPB (Expanded Polystyrene Bead) board, often sold for

from thousands of tiny round beads fused together. That's exactly
what it is. It's chemically the same, and you can hot wire it, but
it's not nearly as strong in flex or tension.

There should be one last entry after every sort - something like "stop
processing".
Then you need to make sure your rules are in the correct order. For
example if you have rules for Don's e-mail as well as for mail posted to
the KF List, you should have the KF List sort rule first, otherwise all
mail from Don would go into the "Don" folder even though it was KF mail.
So, in conclusion, consider two more aspects for each rule. 1) end the
sort when there is a match and 2) make sure to put all your sorts in in
the correct order putting the ones with the highest precedence first.
Sorry I didn't supply the exact syntax for terminating the rule - I used
Eudora in Windows but my primary reader is Ximian Evolution, pine or
mutt since Redhat Linux is my OS of choice.

The real purpose of a backup fuel pump is illustrated by the following:
1) the engine pump is higher than the header.
and
2) there is a very real possibility of fuel flow blockage between the tank and
this engine pump which would render the suction of the mechanical pump inadequate
to deliver the required fuel to the engine. It is hoped that the backup electric
pump would get you safely to the ground.
The extra pump surely seem prudent with the numerous reports of fuel flow blockage
for the Kitfox.
The archives should have several reports of bad fuel lines, plugged filters loose
Kreeme, bad fuel shutoff valves, and leaking engine pumps.
And As the previous CEO of Skystar said something to the effect that the most
common failure on Kitfox's has been the fuel system. So it seems prudent to make
that system very reliable with some degree of redundancy.

In addition to what Paul said...
Do you have the rule set to active? In Outlook, there is a checkmark you
have to set next to the rule. Also, you can "Run rule now", so it will
process all the emails in your inbox and apply the rule to each one.
If that does not work, try creating a new rule that looks for the string
"Kitfox-List" in the subject line.

Glider Tow Hooks work Excellent!
Don't know who had the initial posting on this, but we had a tow hooks on
most of our aircraft without starters. Our Stearman, Cubs, Champs, Chief and a
couple others when I started instructing in early 60's. Before propping, or
cranking in the case of the Stearman insured the hook was securely fastened to
a
tie down, after engine started and inside airplane and ready to taxi simply
pull the cord and release the hook! Hundreds of hours flown propping aircraft
with no one else around, never had an aircraft get away.
SAFETY FIRST Cheap insurance!
I also towed banners with the Stearman so was a double usage on it.
