So unless you are using that to tie down for hand propping or float ops it might be something you will never use. Flying with them open is no problem in cruise just a lot more noise. Does make for a great view during the warm season. The clearance between the alternator and the firewall looks like it might be just enough to clear the bolts, but will the drive shaft and coupler clear? It appears that the drive coupler failed since the alternator doesn't turn when the engine does, but it does spin by hand! I was shocked by the price of the coupler ($1200 new and $600 rebuilt). After all bombs are away, the door can be shut, or not. Takeoffs are also ok with door open. bh > Hi All > > I have a KF classic IV 1200. I have flown with the doors completelly off or > on. On the contrary, I would, dear Steve! Just to pick the daisies with my teeth! Seriously, during my training and on two occasions, my instructor opened his door just at a critical landing's moment. He swore it was involuntary and that the latch wasn't properly in but I still suspect him to have done it on purpose, to see my reaction. The bottom line is: it didn't seem to affect the aircraft's performance although - as Leroy says - it must affect somewhat the lift of that wing.
