I have some drawings of the tow hook Jim Maupin used on the Carbon Dragon
ultralight glider. If you are only going to use it as a tie down release it
is cheap and easy to make. Should be able to adapt it for the tail of an
      airplane.

      Frank,

The experimental aircraft can no longer be used as tow planes, banner tugs.
So unless you are using that to tie down for hand propping or float ops it
might be something you will never use.

Has anyone considered or actually installed a glider release tow hook on
a tail dragger config Kitfox? Something I'm thinking about doing-using

It was the gasket used on a Mercedes car.

Bring your old gasket, and find such a dealer.

Here is the part # for the gasket. A perfect fit for
the cap gasket is Mercedes Benz fuel cap gasket # 140-471-00-79 seal ring.
Probably close to $3 apiece by now.

      FWIW

Back in the early 90's Avid Aircraft did a test with their airplane to see
if they turned off the fuel pump if the engine would stay running. Aircraft
was 582 Rotax powered. They had the airplane heavily loaded in hopes to
make it a practical test simulating a reaslistic flight scenario.

The results showed that the engine would stay running with the fuel pump
disabled as long as they didn't run wide open throttle or at high angle
climbs. If I remember right the gravity fuel pressure measures a pound and
a half. So you can at least fly back home without a fuel pump as long as
you don't run the throttle hard.

I do think it is always best to have a redundant fuel pump installed, but
also understand the additional weight and complexity issues. So I do not
have one in my 912 ul model IV.

(the dual wing tank system of the Avid is much the same as the Kitfox, but
the header tank actually sits lower in the fueselage than does the plastic
tank in my Model IV Kitfox)

Any chance you could give the part number to the list. I work in a

cost and availability if I just had the part number.

The coupler failed last year on 24ZM at 480 hours. I had to pull the engine in
order to change the coupler. I went with an overhauled replacement from Drake
in Oklahoma. Be sure and change the oil and check the screen/filter. Mine had
small bits of rubber from the coupler. I also had to replace the nut on the end
of the alternator shaft. There is a torque limit when tightening the nut and
I could not get the cotter pin holes to line up without exceeding it.

My model four project has been sitting on the gear for many years before I
picked it up last year. As far as I can tell, it has always been stored
inside. I can only assume that the bungees on it are the original ones that
came with the kit in 1993. I noted on the email regarding bungees that they
should be replaced every 5 years. Would this apply to mine as well, even
though it hasn't seen any takeoffs or landings?

That's what I was afraid of...the clearance behind the alternator looks
pretty tight. I guess I'll be pulling the engine soon.

      Thanks,

The primary difference is the firewall forward and the flaperons. Both will
      work on a 6.

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a Series 6 and Series 7
Kitfox? Skystar does not list the 6 any more and I don't want to buy an
unfinished project if parts availability is going to be a problem. Thanks
      in advance.

Was wondering about fuel octane for best performance and economy?

      Refer to the Rotax manual...

Min 92 Oct unleaded is recommended
100LL can be used but you should also use a lead scavenger such as TCP. TCP
is almost impossible to get a hold of these days.

That number would be the gross wt. of the aircraft.

      Paul,
Below is a pretty good site for fuel pressures in reference to Ellision
throttle bodies. The pressure quoted is 1 lb for every 30 inches of height. I

don't think the Kitfox has 30 inches from the bottom of the wing tank to the
carb inlet so, pressure would be less than 1 lb. We discussed this many moons

ago and I believe it was JR that tried running his 582 with the pump
disabled. If I remember correctly, it didn't work too well but did run at low

throttle. Problem is, the engine ran lean (I think).

I believe I just brought in the cap and all of their gaskets are the same

      folded.

The Model IV has essentially 3 variants all being Model IV's as opposed to
      assigning another name.

Early Model IV's had a gross weight of 1050 and was later increased to 1200.
Therefore it was easy to identify them as a Model IV - 1050 or 1200
accordingly. Unfortunately there is no way to increase the Model IV - 1050
      to 1200.

Then there is the Model IV Speedster. A Model IV - 1200 with "Speed"
      options and a shortened wing.

Then there is the Classic IV. All Classic IV's are 1200 gross. For a brief
time the Model IV was discontinued and then re-introduced as the Classic IV.

One more..... the Lite squared... without getting into too much detail....
It is also essentially a Model IV.

OOPS... almost forgot about the XL. Another variant of the Model IV with a
      1050 gross weight.

      Confused yet ?

Current production is the Classic IV. The Lite squared, XL and Speedster
      were all discontinued.
