Just out of curiosity, where and who did you pay for the kit?

      Rick,

Sorry. A bit late to answer - been gone way too much.

I had already added an 11 oz collector to my breather
before my first flight. It kept about 4 oz inside,
but nearly 1/2 qt blew out of that bottle too and all
over the plane. I ordered a better 1 qt collector
      from Summit Racing for $30:

      <http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=search.asp&type=bysummitpart&searchtype=both&part=sum-g1506&x=16&y=8>

I'll see if that will hold it. Also, it appears that
I need to run a qt low of the 6 qt capacity to keep
      the oil in.

Then I am going to look to see if they make a 10w50
oil to replace my 20w50 to allow it to drain back
better when cold. My oil pressure is about 90 cold,
so it doesn't hurt to be thinner. As soon as I can
get it to run cooler (220 F now) I shouldn't need the
      50 weight either.

When I get some time off to make the changes and fly
it again, I'll let you all know if it worked.
Probably not going to happen for another 2 months
      though.

      Kurt S.

Speaking of...Where has Tom been lately? I suppose he
is fine tuning his plane and finishing up the forced
landing damage, but it would be good to hear from him
on the list again. I have his phone #, but hate to
bug him any more than I already did about the exhaust.

Spinner? No Gene, haven't had time to fix the spinner
"O" ring yet. Today is the first day I have had to
catch up since my "first flight" and I am using it all
      for housework and paperwork.

      To the List:

I need manufacturer part numbers for the following. I am also showing the
      quantity needed..
        1. Cleveland brake cylinders (4 ea).
        2. Cleveland wheels, 6:00 x 6 series (2 ea).
        3. Axle for Cleveland wheels (2 ea).
        4. Brakes for Cleveland wheels (2 ea).
Although I paid for the entire kit in August of 2002, I have yet to
      receive
any of the above parts. Can anyone help me to get a source for these parts
      at
      less than full retail price?
I alsoneed the main gear (Grove) and a Rotax 912S ( both of which were

      Michel Gordillo,

Just got my copy of KF Model plans yesterday. Wow,
they are impressive. Very clear and well done.

No doubt they are of a Model IV with good detail. A
10' span and good enough detail that any model I thru
IV owner could make a detailed mini-4 copy of their
own. I'll have to adjust it to match my 5 as others
will have to for the -5 and on, but these are great
      plans. :-)

      Thanks Michel!

Unfortunately, I'm afraid what's wrong with regards to getting your Grove gear,
Rotax engine, etc., is that Skystar is probably busted. The company was talking
Chapter 11 several months ago. It seems that I read somewhere that several
of the EAA chapter members in Idaho who purchased kits at the same time had
also not received engines they had already paid for. It's happened before. A
company gets in financial straits, and uses money paid for items needed in the
future to cover today's operating expenses hoping they'll catch up in time to
provide the purchased items. They don't always catch up. I hope I'm wrong,
but it sounds ominously familiar. DO NOT ARCHIVE

I would like to hear more about the problems some of you builders are
having. I am close to choosing the S-7 but only want the fire wall back .
maybe one of you can answer one of my question , when you purchase the kit
you wanted , did you get it in pieces or the whole kit at one time , my
thinking was to go to the factory and pick up the whole kit at one time and
      pay them at that time.

Clem, I may be wrong but I don't think Skystar is quite as bad off as you
suggested. I have been following their web site for a few months. I note
they sold enough kits at Oshkosh to fill their 2003 production slots, and
are offering incentives for 2004 sales. I purchased and received a firewall
back quick build S-7 kit in August this year. I received most of it on
time, although I, too, am back-ordered for the gear and Cleveland parts.
They obviously have some problems with those parts, but I wouldn't assume
the Company is busted just yet.

John, I ordered the Firewall back only. Of course that was another time -
1992, and another era. I bought the Model IV 1200 and it was my
understanding that they delivered 40 kits the month they delivered mine, so
forking out the $11,500 was fairly easy to do.

I spent 5 years building and the engine was picked up later and in my
opinion, that is the way to go. I had a fresh engine in 1998. I also took
advantage of special pricing that SS offered on the FF forward kit later.
They seem to offer incentives from time to time.

Would I be worried as a new buyer putting several thousand dollars out for a
kit right now, You bet I would. But from the perspective of a long time
Kitfox follower, I am very confident that Kitfox will be around for a long
      time to come.

I took a CFI neighbor up on Thanksgiving day for a familiarization ride so
he would be able to check out a friend of his in a Kitfox - in Tanzania,
where he spends every other quarter of the year, and he was extremely
enthusiastic on the flight characteristics of this wonderful little
airplane. The Kitfox is definitely just too good to disappear from the
      scene.

Of course this is an opinion only, but I have spent some time listening to
what is going on and snooping around a little bit and this is what I
      believe.

      Regards,

      Lowell

      Scott,
I received the engine mount with the initial airframe shipment in October
2002. The exhaust system arrived this past month. I don't know if it is a
'Tuned system by Rotax' or what. The engine component advertisement calls for
one by Rotax to develop full power. Several people I have contacted have been
waiting over one (1) year for parts and engine shipments.
      Arthur
P.S. will also contact u off list.

      Hi Don,
The 'something that is wrong' is that, according to a good source, SkyStar has

"blown off" Grove and is looking for another manufacturer for the main gear.

      Hi Don,
I paid SkyStar a deposit of $1,000, by debit card, the first part of August
2002, right after Arlington. The balance of $37,138.75 was paid by check and
it cleared the bank on 8/8/02. These transactions were handled by telephone
to the sales department at SkyStar.
The dollar amount of parts owed, according to SkyStar's latest shipment list,
is $16,436.64. The largest item being the 912S and vacuum system totaling
      $14,000.

Hi Clem, This is all TRUE!
I heard about the possible bust late September 2002 via the EAA hotline. I
almost fainted. This was on a Friday evening. That sunday, I drove my
motorhome to Caldwell and confronted Mr. Downs when they opened Monday
      morning.
      I received a 'partial' airframe kit 10/18/02.
The rest has been via 'trickle-itis.

      Hi John,
Best advice would be to make a contract-of-delivery and only pay for the items

      shipped. NO BACK ORDERS!!
If you go to Caldwell to pick it up, you will be subject to Idaho state sales
tax. You need someone there that you can depend on to inventory the kit
      before it is shipped.
Good luck and keep the list posted.

You are right. And I understand that the losses were
uninsured. 4 planes - 2 demos from SS and 2 customer
      planes.
