If you go to the autoparts stores ,,, they have fuel tank repair material
that you mix and apply directly to leaks with the fuel in them....READ about
it and see if it will work on PLASTIC,, probably polypropalene.... If the
tank is ABS they there are two part ABS repair epoxy available that I got at
a PPG paint store.. I might still have an empty tube if your interested in
the details. I used it to repair ABS farings.. It doesn't have much tensil
strength to cover structural cracks unless you enbed fiber glass cloth in
it. IF it's just a fitting leak,,,more teflon tape,,,carefully applied
behing the front threads might have a chance, but you for sure don't want to
get any into the fuel lines... bob U.

Have you tried putting a hose clamp around the plastic boss and tightening
it. I had a similar problem on my header tank and this simple fix solved it
immediately

Gary, sorry to bother you again so soon, but I forgot to re-ask you about your
experience with a Challenger. There is a 2-place for sale locally that is pretty
cherry. I have considered them, but never flown one. I'd like your opinion.

Gary, I tried to write you off-list ( algate@attglobal.net ), but the
message was rejected by your server. Is there a way to write you directly.
I have a couple of questions that I don't want to bother the list with,
regarding IVO in-flight adjustable props, and Challenger ultralights.

I am using XP-Pro, and have no problem getting to that site.
However, I have found that things like this can be greatly affected by the anti-virus
software, and the firewall software installed on my system.
If you try to be strict when you set these programs up you will likely restrict
yourself right back into a corner.. Also, restricting cookies too severely will
sometimes affect what you can access. Some sites require cookies.

Well, I don't have skis yet, Bob, so my opinion is only theoretical.
Here, we have a lot of snow. But at my airfield, the asphalt runway is cleaned
for snow very shortly after a snowfall. I am sure I can fly the whole winter
with only tyres. But I don't like the idea to fly cross-country with only
tyres, knowing that under me I have maybe several feet of snow. So, for me, the
wheel penetration skis are ideal: I can take off from asphalt and land on snow,
if needed.
The drawback is probably the extra weight. The advantage is probably that I
don't need to jack up the plane, remove the wheel and bleed the brake fluid, to
change from wheel to ski and vice-versa. Also, I can hangar the plane without
needing a dolly.
I guess it won't be too much of a problem to land with the wheel penetration
skis on asphalt since there is a little wheel at the end of the skis. I am sure
it will make a noise when taxiing and taking off but I can live with that.
For the time being, I have seen the Avid Flyer penetration skis. But they are
not wide enough for my balloon tyres. I intend to make my own skis. Or rather,
get someone to weld them for me. The problem I a dealing with now is whether I
should try to remove the axle and replace it with a longer one, or if I can
just extend the existing one. The problem is: how to remover the axle? I talked
to the first owner of the plane, the guy who built it, and he confirms that he
got the axles in place by doing as the Denny's manual says: put the axle in the
freezer and heat up the gear. If I am to get it out, I'll have to reverse this
cold/heat process.
My next step: talk to a local guy who knows more than me about mechanic. It's
never a bad idea to ask several opinions before doing this kind of work.
Cheers,
Michel

Bob,
I just finished fabricating myself a set of wheel-thru skis for my
Series V.
Michel is partially correct in his assumptions. I too have the wide
Tundra tires so I could not "buy" a ready made set.
Mine are fabbed using 1/2" square aluminum tubing and are based on the
design of the gentleman from Wisconsin who does some work on the Sonex.
He has some nice pictures and I can e-mail you pics of mine if you want.
The ski part is made from 3/8" HDP (same thing we use for dog sled
runners up here) and you can find this about anywhere "Down South".
My skis weigh about 3 lbs each including the bungees and safety rigging.
About a gallon of fuel worth.
( Most of the weight is the HDP)
They are just slightly heavier than the wheel pants that I removed this
last summer and I made them long and wide enough so that they float on
deep snow.
It is critical that you do not allow too much of the wheel to protrude
through the ski. I have just under two inches of tire showing.
Otherwise, the tires act as a brake in the snow. I used a roller blade
wheel to support the rear of the skis. It's nice to have the ability to
use "reverse" thrust to slow down on the hard packed snow. I don't use
any braking on snow/ice anyway but rollout can be long without the
"reverse" especially when landing on frozen, windblown lakes. (Don't
forget to put in some kind of a center runner or you will put yourself
in a hellofa ground loop)
Have fun on your skis! I think they look pretty cool!

Jack,
Typically the leak is around the coupling and not the fitting. The
couplings need to be removed, cleaned, dried and then re-installed using a
sealant such as Permatex 9AR.

I'd like to start a dialogue on S-6 amphib floats. I seem to recall seeing a discussion
on S-4's on floats but not the 5's, 6's, and 7's. N60FS get's inspected
on Monday, so its time to get serious and make a choice. The Czech Work's float
is well made, but also quite expensive. Murphy's kit looked to be well designed
and looks to be lighter. It's difficult to get installed weights from the
manufacturers They seem willing to supply a weight/float, but not the exchange
weight the builder will see when the floats are on the plane. Would like
to hear your experiences with specific float manufactures as you worked thru your
installation.
Also, someone offered to answer questions by phone over the past year. I lost some
files and no longer have the e-mail address. Would appreciate hearing from
you if you'd be willing to answer a lot of questions over the phone about your
experience.

Scott,
Sounds like your's are well thought out. Could you
post some pics and/or drawings on SportFlight of your
skis? I am interested and apparently others are too.
