This morning's USUA website says;
12/24/2003: Sport Pilot News
USUA received a phone call at 10AM EST, December 24, 2003 from Sue Gardner of FAA
informing us that late yesterday afternoon, the Secretary of the Department
of Transportation has signed off on the proposed Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft
Rule. It now goes to the Office of Management and Budget, the final step
in the rulemaking process. OMB is expected to use their allotted 90 days to evaluate
the rule and act accordingly. If all goes well, and there is little to
expect otherwise, we may see SP/LSA sometime after April 2004.
"This is great news for our community," says USUA EVP Dale Hooper, "USUA members
who have not yet registered as ultralight pilots, are encouraged to do so immediately
so that the special provisions allowed to persons holding this registration
may be taken advantage of."
USUA will continue to monitor the development of these proceedings and encourages
all members to visit the USUA website for any and all news and announcements.

Sport Pilot creates a new Pilots certificate. Driver's liscense
medical(no class III med required) and 20 hours of instruction. The
rule also creates a new aircraft catagory called Light Sport Aircraft
(LSA) this catagory is then broken down into two types Experimental
Light Sport (ELSA) and Special Light Sport (SLA, Factory built). A
CFI can conduct training in a SLA and be compensated for hire. An
ELSA can be used for training, but, you can not charge for the
aircraft. You can split the expenses of the flight with the student
AND you can charge for your time as an instructor.
It is a great day guys!

Pacbell is suppose to be working the Matronics connectivity issue this
morning. Intermittent connectivity is still a issue although things are
better than yesterday. They will probably be doing some intrusive testing
on the line later today which will disrupt connections during the test.

One particular Christmas a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for
His annual trip... but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got
sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the
regular ones, so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind
schedule. Then, Mrs. Claus told him that her Mom was coming to visit. This
stressed Santa even more.
Then when he went to harness the Reindeer, he found three of them were
about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven
knows where. More stress.
Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the
Toy bag fell to the ground, and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa
Went back into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey.
When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had hid the liquor
and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he accidentally
dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over
the
kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten
the straw it was made from.
Just then, the doorbell rang and Santa cussed his way to the door. He
opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas
Tree. The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa. Isn't it
just a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you, Isn't it just a lovely
tree?
Where would you like me to stick it?"
Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas Tree
Blue Skies!!

Well, I was just outside. The temperature is a "balmy" -12 degrees and I
happened to look up and what do you think I saw?
That's right, a rather un-aerodynamic, large red sleigh and twelve
reindeer. (actually, they could have been caribou, it's hard to tell at
a distance) I couldn't quite make out the pilot although it was an open
cockpit. Whoever the pilot was was wearing a rather colorful (red)
flight suit. He was making a southerly (180) heading, descending from
5000. As it passed over the Nome (OME) airport, I could of sworn that
there were packages of some sort being dropped. (I'll call the A/P
manager and see if anyone got hurt.)
Looks like the aircraft is making its way "down south" so be on the
look-out for this guy. I'm not sure what he's up to, but I'm sure it is
for benign purposes.

I know, Kurt. And the funny thing is that ... Switzerland doesn't yet allow
ULMs! :-) For our English speaking friends, ULM* stands for Ultra Lger
Motoris. Which makes me think that Alain is ... a French speaking Swiss! :-)
A shame this site is not running. It has a map of Europe with some of the ULM
airfields. This is interesting for microlight travellers. Incidentally, from
new year, I'll be helping the Norwegian Microlight Association to make a better
web site. Unfortunately it is still only in Norwegian. In my opinion, an
English version should also exist and it should be linked, somewhere in Europe.

I did some research about Santa. It turns out that:
There are 2 billion children in the world. But since Santa doesn't appear to
handle Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and Jewish children, that reduces his work load
to 15% of the total - a mere 378 million or so. At an average rate of 3.5
children per household, that's 91.8 million homes.
Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with thanks to time zones and the
rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west. This works out to
822.6 visits per second. Santa has 1/1000th of a second to move on to the next
house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million homes are distributed evenly
we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75 1/2
million miles. This means that Santa's sleigh is traveling at 650 miles per
second, 3000
times the speed of sound.
Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium sized LEGO set (2
pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons not counting Santa. On land,
conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that
"flying reindeer" could pull TEN TIMES the usual amount, we need 214,000
reindeer. This increases the weight, not counting the sleigh, to 353,430 tons.
353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance.
The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.2 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per
second. Each. The entire team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousands of a
second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500 times

Michel,
Your thinking and numbers are flawed! The reason I think so is that I
have evidence there is more than just one single Santa. We have been
assuming there was only one by inference only. I was at Safeway buying a
turkey and Santa was at the door collecting money for the Salvation Army
and just as I noticed him I got a call on my cell phone from my wife at
Bell Square (big shopping mall here) and from her vantage point, there
were at least a dozen more Santas getting their photos taken with
children and clearly there were more in department stores. Later she was
in Factoria mall and saw more Santas.
And, their have been Santas reported in other malls in California and
even other cities in Washington too. So I believe there could be
hundreds if not thousands or even 10's of thousands of Santas to do the
big job tonight.
The real truth is, not all the sleighs are pulled by Donner and Vixen
and Rudolph. No one has said but there is undoubtedly 8 or 10 reindeer
for every Santa. I think there is enough so they can all get there jobs
done.
I do think it is wishful thinking that he will come down your chimney.
No 300 lb Santa is going to get down my 8 inch flue with a bag of toys.
He's simply got to be doing it another way. And some people have a wood
fire going too which would preclude using the chimney.
In conclusion, since I don't think we can know all the details, let's
just say there is something magical about the whole affair.

I wrote this for fun a few years back at this time of year. Many of you will
remember the names of those listed who are no longer on the list or with us.
I simply chose 33 names from the last postings to the list that December. I
personally miss seeing Mike Harter's postings.
Christmas Eve in Melbourne, Florida

No noses were frozen, no snow on the ground.
No Melniks in flannels were tucked into bed,
They all wore their headsets and flight suits instead.
With Laura in curlers and Danny's ramp cap,
They had just settled down for a long winter's nap.
When out on the driveway there arose such a clatter,
Danny sprang to the observation deck to see what was the matter.
The moon was aglow on this clear winter's night,
He checked the winds and noted twenty miles of clear sight.
Then what on the pavement before his eyes did appear?
But whole squadrons of Kitfoxes all pulling a giant sled in the rear!
He called for his Zacky to make a count of 'em all 'for they go,
But the young lad was online to, can you guess, Lego?
He called out for Laura to come see all models 1,2,3,4,5 and newer,
When suddenly up on that sleigh he saw, could that be Joe Brewer?
Joe jumped from his mount and gave a wee chuckle,
He was wearing Bermuda shorts and a Kitfox Lite buckle.
He went straight to his work and unloaded for Dan's neighbor a kit crate,
Pulled his flight log out and shouted: "That makes two hundred and eight!"
Then back to the cockpit in a hurry he went,
Scanned his team, "Is Harter's right flapperon bent?"
"Clear all props!" he yelled loud as thunder,
And they all fired up first lick, over three hundred in number!
"Ready for take off!" He pulled out THE LIST,
"On Czernin, on Ducar, on Jones, and Morrise!
On Shumaker, Oakley, Pearsall, and Bennitae!
On Graichen, Smythe, Shiple, and Fitt!
On Harrington, Jr, Lynch, and Cygrit!
On Kerr, Gordillo, Rice, and Franz!
On Robertson, Hays, Roy, and Monse!
On Liles, Lovern, Puls, and Hottle!
On Doerwald, Robertson, Hausding, and Krottle!"
They all flew away too fast, but you get the gist.
