Chris,
Kerry,
Michel,
There are a lot of ways to place advertisement on a site - from very cleanly integrated
up to very aggressive. Key point is the
European market is cut into very small parts, e.g. a lot of SOHO enterprises covering
local activities or factory representations.
This makes it much harder to find good advertisers, for example there are about
two dozen Zenair representations beside the factory
in Czech.
In short, counting all time and expenses, www.ulmeurope.com (Alain) and www.experimental.ch (Kurt) represents an investment - direct
or indirect - of about half a million Swiss Francs. With my part being a rough
hobbyist estimate, it might be much higher
calculating commercial rates. And with one US$ is approaching something like 1.25
CHF these days - this is about US$ 400k.
Here some snippets from the recent mail exchange with Alain:
----
Hello Kurt
Merry Xmas !
Well, the story of the ULM Europe website is pretty simple:
the costs for maintening such a website, which is well known in more than 120 countries,
and whose attraction were the various
articles published,
(meaning: travel, lodging, meal expenses) and, at the time, the lack of financing
(costed me about 300'000 CHF before I stopped !)
via advertisement, made that I froze it in September 99.
The only way to have it live again would be to find a sponsor, and then to re-build
it, fully professional, with the various
journalits in the various countries (no more travels etc from myself alone, articles
directly from the specific countries). This
means paying not only for the Web hosting, but as well for the articles and their
translation in the 5 major languages. Not a small
monthly investment, as you can guess. Even my good friend Xavier Werquin, who build
the well known Nav2000 website, had to stop. The
success of ULM Europe was based on a very simple concept: a Web-based magazine
in the 5 major languages.
If a website remains static, it has no chance to attract either readers nor advertisers.
And it dies by lack of both. Yes, today, it
could be made a paying site (say, maybe EUR 20 a year), but this again will only
work if very regular articles are published monthly
by the various countries. So... Should a financer be found, I would be ready to
discuss the matter with him/her. Knowing however
that chances to get an ROI are pretty scarce, and only on the long run.
As far as Europe is concerned, please do not forget that the European Microlight
Federations was recently founded. You may here as
well expect, with the time, more information about the situation in various countries.
To my knowledge, Switzerland, via the SMF,
has presently no project to adhere to this Federation.
This is a simple question of costs: if we can cover them, then it is easy to do.
I know there is a need for that, and I receive
every few day requests from all around asking "when will that site be updated".
But I won't move until financing is ensured for at
least 2 or 3 years.
So, should someone at the EAS know of a wealthy person, who has real interest in
light aviation, and has the willingness to invest
serious money... I'll be glad to discuss with him :0)
Don't know if this really helps you :0))))
Cheers

Hello Alain,
Stopped counting hours end expenses for experimental.ch years ago - honestly I
have never seen anything from the EAS! Recently I
simply did not paid for the domain ... and after several complaints the EAS finally
paid for it.
Hosting: free
Editing: free
Traveling: free
Translations: free
...
Can perfectly make the calculation. My guess is that I had been able to finance
and build at least two light aircraft projects over
the last years.
It can NOT be the idea, a single person does everything - does not matter if it
is the Swiss EAS or the European ULM environment.
Do you have a link to this new foundation?
To you and your wife, family..
Merry Christmas!
-Kurt.
----
Kurt,
LOL welcome to the club :0)))
Well, the EMF has not yet a website (they are not very computer-literate, let's
say :0)). I'm copying you below the introductory
note. Basically, this is led by France (which has presently the best ultralight
environment and legal aspects, and has as well the
largest number of ULs in Europe), helped by Germany and UK, who both long to get
their aviation authorities to handle with more
realistic assessments the UL matters.
Set objective is to help any member to open the ultralight rules to adopt more
convenient systems allowing the growth of the
ultralight community, and protect them against the willingness of some to even
more restrict sport flights. This includes fighting
against any country tending to define something that has a MTOW above 450 / 495
kg as an "ultralight". Remember that anything under
450 / 495 kg is out of the scope of the European agencies, and remains the sole
definition of each country.
Remember as well that Dominique Mreuze, the UL President all other countries envy,
is as well the president of the French aviation
federation (this includes all aviation federations, inclusive RSA), so that we
get better insurances and fighting power against the
civil aviation authorities.
<snip - here are the EUROPEAN MICROLIGHT FEDERATION Statutes - let me know if this
is of common interest - Kurt>

I don't know, Chris, I just discovered this site a few days ago. But my guess is
that it is just "a good idea," yet they need some
sponsorship to get the site to run properly. I don't mind a site with advertising
banners popping up ... as long as it is for
products I might be interested in.
Cheers,
Michel

Thank you, Kurt, very interesting. Here, in Norway, it's different. We can use
the Norwegian Aero Club server and all design work is done by volunteers. Of
course, it demands the latter and that's why I have recently been shanghaied in
the organization! :-)
I think that we, Europeans, are too often expecting from our government to fix
things and we should learn from our American friends and their "community work."
We shouldn't either put our expectations too high. To have the site, and all
articles, translated into 5 languages is, in my humble opinion, too much. It is
better to have a "so-and-so" site that works, than none ... or one that is left
unattended, as it is now.
In any case, my ambition is to have some English written pages on the Norwegian
site, that e.g gives the position and conditions of all our small airfields
that are not on the Bottlang / Jeppesen maps.
Once done, I think it could be interesting to have that "local" information
linked from another "central" European web site. What do you think?
Cheers,
Michel

In June 2002, four Norwegians Sky-Arrows flew to Rome, Italy, passing over
Austria on their way down, Kerry. They had only microlight licenses. Maybe they
had to seek a special authorization, I can find that out, if you want; my
instructor was one of them.
This being said, the Norwegian Microlight license is not much different from
the PPL-A license. In fact, we use the same books. There are a few things we,
microlight pilots, don't need to read, like: night piloting and high altitude
medicine. One addition for microlights: the two-stroke engine.
I know that some Norwegian PPL-A pilots think that we, microlight pilots, are a
gang of nerds who cluster the sky with our "mosquitoes" but the truth is: most
of us own their own plane and therefore we fly more often (although maybe not
as long) than most PPL-A pilots who rent the club's plane on the odd occasion.
... well, look at me: Yesterday I was at a friend, we talked about my plane, he
looked interested and this afternoon, we went to fly half an hour. This would
have never happened if I didn't own my own plane.
Cheers,
Michel

SPORT PILOT LEAVES DOT FOR OMB
Christmas came early to the aviation community when Department of Transportation
Secretary Norman Mineta signed off on the sport pilot/light-sport aircraft
rulemaking package and forwarded it to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB)
late on Tuesday, December 23.
"This is great news, as it completes an important step to make sport pilot/light-sport
aircraft a reality," said EAA President Tom Poberezny. "My compliments
to FAA and DOT for their hard work in getting this important task accomplished.
EAA and the aviation community have been looking forward to this important
announcement as the rulemaking package enters its final phase."
OMB now has 90 days in which to review and return the package to the FAA, at which time it would be published in the Federal Register as a final rule. Visit www.port
Merry Christmas from all of us at EAA!

Subject: | Fuel Sight Tubes |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: Bill Hammond <kitfox@itsys3.com>
I just replaced one of my fuel tank sight tubes due to a leak
that developed on the inside of the bent area. I was using the
plastic tubing included in the original construction kit for the
tube.
When I removed the leaking tube, I was surprised to see how
brittle the tubing had become due to its exposure to gasoline. I
have had fuel in the tanks for about two months (since the first
engine runup). I was able to bend and break the tube with only
minor pressure.
Has anyone found a more durable material to use for the sight
guage tubes?
