Hi Ted,
Happy New Year to you and your family, and all the list members.
Interesting that you've been up at Elsmere Island, hmm. wondering what
kind of work bring you that far?
I've been looking at the map and finding quite a few places up there with
Norwegian names.
For the fun of it, I've made a flight plan from Tromso (the place I'm
living) to Eureka, with the following way points:
ENTC(Tromso)-ENSB(Longyearbyen)-Camp North (an American base at the
Northern most point of Greenland)-Alert (the Northermost point of Elsmere
Island)- Eureka.
Leg 1: Tromso to Longyearbyen, distance: 517 Nm and heading 355 deg. ETE
8:19 (ground speed 62 kts)
Leg 2: ENSB-Camp North, distance 344 Nm and heading 316 deg. ETE 5:32
Leg 3: Camp North-Alert, distance 408 Nm and heading 302 deg. ETE 6:33
Leg 4: Alert-Eureka, distance 266 Nm and heading 251 deg. ETE 4:16
Total distance from Longyearbyen to Eureka: 1018 Nm and total time enroute
will be (in no wind): 16:22 hours in a Kitfox cruising at 62 Kts ground
speed.
Yes, I visit Longyearbyen 3-4 times a year, this because the company I'm
working for is operating two Dornier 228-202K at this Island. One of the
Dornier is flying coast guard (fishery patrol), the other Dornier is
flying between the three airports at the Island Svalbard (or Spitzbergen).
This Norther part of the world "Artic" is one of the most beautiful place
there is, -absolutely IMO. In Svalbard you'll find, polar bear, polar fox
and rein dear. Plus lots of birds and other small animals. There is no
bushes, just very low vegetation , very rough nature and perma frost.
Maybe I've mentioned this before, -but, the Fox I have is one of three
Kitfoxes built in Longyearbyen. There is built two model II, S/N:461 and
S/N:462 (my plane), the third one is a model IV (1050)- cant remember the
S/N for this Fox.
Best regard
Torgeir.
