--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Randy Daughenbaugh" <rjdaugh@rapidnet.com> Bob, This really helps! And the education on the strength/brittleness is appreciated as well. As an additional issue, I think I also need bushings/dowels/lugs that serve the same function between the prop extention and the prop hub. These need to be between 25 and 30 mm long. Are these available some place? Thanks again, Randy . -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Bob Robertson Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: 912S - Powerfin Prop Now what? --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Bob Robertson" <aerocon1@telusplanet.net> Randy... Wadda you mean "not smart enough"!!!! You already figured out that the 8mm bolts won't work in a 13mm hole. ; ) Actually, there are some "spigot" nuts (shouldered nuts) that press into the 13mm holes and have an 8mm thread. These nuts will protrude through the front of the prop flange and also act as dowels. Your prop should have come with a hub that is drilled to accept these dowels. If you are using a 2" prop extension you will need to have the extension drilled to accept the dowels. Any of the Rotax Service Centers can supply you with the nuts. You will have to replace the bolts you recieved with the Powerfin. Make sure the new bolts are also 8mm 8.8... (Don't get any of the high strength metric bolts as they are too brittle and can (will) fracture. Hope this helps Bob Robertson Light Engine Services Ltd. Rotax Service Center St. Albert, Ab. Subject: Air filters - Carb Ice - 912
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Randy Daughenbaugh" <rjdaugh@rapidnet.com> Lowell, Your comment is right on for something that I am wrestling with. I have been considering not using the air induction system and going with two air filters with warm cowl air rather than the single air filter with fresh cold air that the series 7 firewall forward calls for. I felt the trade off was better breathing (less air friction) versus lower density warm air. But I don't know where the balance is between the two effects. If I read you right, you feel that carb ice is more likely with the carb heat system in place than if it is not used.... AND you feel that performance is better with two air filters. Is that right? And what do your base this on? My guess from comments on the list here is that most people do not use the carb heat system that Rotax supplies for the 912, but does pulling cool fresh air like the series 7 firewall forward allows give better performance? Is carb ice more likely in the 912S than the 912? Randy - Mounting 912S on fuselage and anxious to get in the air!!!! . -----Original Message----- From: owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kitfox-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Lowell Fitt Subject: Re: Kitfox-List: Air filters --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Lowell Fitt" <lcfitt@inreach.com> John, Do you have the carb heat system on your airplane? If not you are the first person I have heard of that had a real carb ice problem. You said you forgotten the knob. Actually, I have heard of carb icing in the Rotax 912, but only in aircraft with the carb heat system in place. The induction air is ducted from the front of the cowl - cold, whereas the air in non carb heat installation the air is obtained from the back of the engine compartment - warm. The absence of the friction in the system more than compensates for the warmer air. --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Bob Robertson" <aerocon1@telusplanet.net> Hi Randy, If the prop extension is commercially made, you might check with the manufacturer. If it is "home brewed", you might require the services of a machinist to make up the drive lugs. There are no "off the shelf" lugs that i am aware of. regards Bob Robertson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Randy Daughenbaugh" <rjdaugh@rapidnet.com> Subject: RE: Kitfox-List: 912S - Powerfin Prop Now what? > --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "Randy Daughenbaugh" <rjdaugh@rapidnet.com> > > Bob, > This really helps! --> Kitfox-List message posted by: "jimshumaker" <jimshumaker@sbcglobal.net> Something interfering with the closure of the fuel shutoff valves in the float bowel. Or an incorrect float setting. Or a stuck float. For a stuck float tap the float bowl with the back of a screwdriver. For something interfering, remove and clean checking for fiberglass strands that may be invisible in fuel.
