Randy,
This has been practice in the Kitfox since I built - 1993 thru 1998. Very
few Kitfox owners I know of have the carb heat box installed. It is
required in Europe, as I understand it, as most government agencies are
tradition driven rather than evidence driven.
I never had the carb heat system installed in my airplane, so don't have
first hand experience with and without, regarding performance, but increased
performance is how I hear it. I can't say regarding the 912S, but suspect
it is the same.

It may be true for Kitfoxes built as Experimental, Lowell, but not as
Microlight. Nor do Microlights need ELT but they need a helmet. And do you
know what it takes to import an American car in e.g. Norway? Lots of
modifications! Yet when the European Union tries to standardize procedures,
people are yelling: " No way! We don'd want stupid rules from Brussels*! We
were much happier before!"
So, it is not only the government agencies but us, liking our "old-fashion"
way of doing things.

Gentlemen, I have carb heat installed on my 912 and have had to use it a few times.
It may just be the way the intake/air filter is mounted but I definitely need it
when the temp/dew point are within a couple degrees. I notice a slight decrease
in
horse power but much better EGT and oil temps when using it.
I have several pics I would be willing to pass along to anyone that's interested.

Looks like you got most the answers you needed... You may want to contact
Dave Morris he should be able to send you some instructions that were done
regarding the prop extension and the Warp Drive Prop. I believe the
Powerfin and the Warp install the same way.

This really helps! And the education on the strength/brittleness is
appreciated as well.
As an additional issue, I think I also need bushings/dowels/lugs that
serve the same function between the prop extention and the prop hub.
These need to be between 25 and 30 mm long. Are these available some
place?

Wadda you mean "not smart enough"!!!! You already figured out that the
8mm
bolts won't work in a 13mm hole. ;
)
Actually, there are some "spigot" nuts (shouldered nuts) that press into
the
13mm holes and have an 8mm thread.
These nuts will protrude through the front of the prop flange and also
act
as dowels. Your prop should have come with a hub that is drilled to
accept
these dowels. If you are using a 2" prop extension you will need to
have
the extension drilled to accept the dowels.
Any of the Rotax Service Centers can supply you with the nuts. You will
have to replace the bolts you recieved with the Powerfin. Make sure
the new bolts are also 8mm 8.8... (Don't get any of the high strength
metric
bolts as they are too brittle and can (will) fracture.

I'll give a report on my experience as well. Replaced the Carb/air system with
the less expensive 2x2.5 air filters resulted in no measurable difference on climb
out (the test attitude).
Then installed the 5.5 in offset air filters and experienced 2-300 increase in
rpm and needed to increase pitch on prop to accommodate the extra power.
Anecdotal, but I won't go back.

As I have seen only a couple of examples, I may easily be wrong in my
assumption on how the 5 or 6 is set up. I have tried to research this
but the only instructions on the Skystar web site is for the 7 firewall
forward.

If you look here you can see the setup calls for the fresh air pickup to
be in a NACA duct ahead of the radiator.
I suspect that you are right! - there may not be a significant
functional difference.

I am very familiar with the Series 6 cowling configuration, but have
only looked at the Series 7. The Series 6 has only two air intake holes
in the front of the cowl. The Series 7 has the two holes, as well as,
the NACA duct on the bottom. The Series 7 two holes are much smaller
than those of the Series 6 since its cowling is much narrower at the
front end. I think this was one of the ways they reduced drag to
increase air speed in the Series 7. It is my guess that the NACA duct
is required to allow more air to the Series 7 radiator.

Maybe this will help.... The earlier Kitfox's, pre Series 7, had filters
on the intake of the carbs.... Unless the optional carb heat box was
installed. Then both carbs were tied to the carb heat box and the filter was
on the intake of the box. I do not believe that many carb heat boxes were
installed and all that I have spoke with that used them said when removed
saw a increase in performance.
The Series 7 is a horse of a different color. For the first time the Kitfox
is utilizing the Rotax induction plenum. The plenum ties both carbs
together and has two ports on it. One port is for fresh air. The Series 7
install has you route a Scat tube from the port down to the NACA scoop in
the cowling and into a filter that has been mounted outside the cowling in
the NACA. The other port is designed for carb heat. SS does not currently
have a kit to utilize this feature. It is designed to use a pull cable to
flip a butterfly shutting down the fresh air and opening the heat. One
could very easily adapt it.
On my aircraft, I chose to install the air filter directly to the induction
plenum and not run the Scat tubing. With the filter inside the cowling I
have not noticed a decrease in performance. I also safety wired the
butterfly so that it could not shut the filtered air off. The Series 7
install is much different then the Series 6.

I don't understand the advantage of it though other than a place to hook
an intake manifold gage to. The way you have set it up wouldn't it
breath better if you just put an air filter on each carb?
I have contemplated taking the nice interlinked butterfly valves out and
put an airfilter on each intake port to improve the breathing. There
are some internals inside the plenum that would appear to restrict the
air flow to the left carbs. Maybe this is the purpose..???? Are there
some advantages the way the carbs are vented?
I can see that it would reduce intake noise.
I have been trying to find a discussion of its function on a rotax
website.
