I live in Virginia and have been landing on our neighbors driveway with
my Kitfox and also my J 3 Cub for over 14 years .The driveway is private and
this is the important part .It also serves 10 others homes as my friend
gave them an easement through his property to build their river front homes
Now their driveway is right off a paved state road and occasionally I will
get the curious passerby to stop . I have even had a sheriff stop by
several times just to look and he was amused by our little homebuilt .
Recently a neighbor just 5 miles away was able to license his driveway
with the county as a private airstrip and just last year paved his
airstrip/driveway ! This is an option , but as asking the state is it "
legal to land on a road " liability now adays ? , just remember the words "
precautionary landing "
I did have an engine out and landed on a 4 lane highway several years ago
He stayed there with me as I got the problem fixed and stopped traffic so I
could take back off ! He did tell me though that his supervisor would
probably not okay this and so he just would not ask and if something else
were to happen during the takeoff that he would take the " I did not tell
him it was OKAY "
Boy do I Love the " Alaska Approach " I just wish that it wasn't SO COLD

Has anyone purchased insurance from Falcon? If so how
was it? I have had Avemco with no real problems except
they keep raising the premiums. Of course there were
also no claims as a reason to raise the price.

I have been with both companies and the last time I got the best deal from
Falcon. As with all insurance you have to decide the level of risk you wish
to take. Falcon allowed me to be very specific in this area. Avemco has
also been good to work with.

Hello List,
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience yet with the new high torque
starter for the 912S that Rotax is recommending.
I am considering replacing mine on my 2000 vintage Series 5, but Skystar has advised
me that it won't fit the Series 5 with the bump cowl. (The bump cowl is
not the problem..it's the engine mount that is a tight fit.) But Lockwood in
Florida is advising that the starter will indeed fit. So I don't know what to
believe just yet. So I am turning to the List to hopefully find an answer.
Thanks for any responses.

I have. Falcon is an agent actually in Texas with a deal with
EAA. They got me a policy with AIG and saved me fully half of
what I was spending with AVEMCO. The policy is just as good,
and Falcon was very good about following up on all the little
details I needed changed (like FBO on the named insured for
hangar, etc.).

According to the law, if you're on Private Property, and not within
5 miles of an airport you can land basically anything you want in
Michigan. If within five miles, then I guess you have to talk to the
Feds about it first. You can land anywhere, including on private
property which is not yours, according to Michigan law in an emergency.
I know somebody's gonna make some smart remark about where you land in
an emergency. But it is something to think about. Technically since it's
written in the law that you can in an emergency, I think it protects
you from being sued for having done it.
Also if you own land with enough room to takeoff and land, you don't
need anybody's permission - Unless you're near an "official" airport.
I think sitting on the front porch wih a beer in hand when the sheriff
pulls up, it might be tough to describe what emergency forced you
down on the road in front of your own place ... But perhaps.

I've always used Falcon. I've heard several stories on the list about having
problems with Falcon as far as their requirements to insure a Fox. Like,
several hours in exact model. When I got mine, they even allowed my time as
passenger in a Fox. I made it clear that I was not PIC. They didn't care and
said it showed experience. I didn't argue. I have the basic liability with $20K
hull for $1100./yr.

I too had an engine out just outside of DC in VA a while ago at
night and had to land on the highway. About every agency that has
lights on top showed up to see, including the news. Perfect landing and
there was nothing to see except a "Do Not Enter" sign embedded in the
wing! FAA made me do the standard check ride and the tow truck made me
pay for him pulling me 5 miles to the nearest airport but VA was just
amused!

Ron,
The early model Avids kits where made for tail or nose wheels. If you can
find one to look at it was a simple change. I don't know why Skystar
didn't keep that option going. I might be wrong but the tabs welded aft
of where your tube gear mounts is set up to move the gear aft. Up front
on the early Avids there was a pipe welded to the frame vertically to
slide the gear into and the right rudder pedal on the pilots side had a
push pull linkage to the nosewheel. With just a picture of this you could
make it happen.

I would defer to Frank at Skystar to crank the numbers and give an
engineered answer for than one. Also, if your wings are already rigged to
the fuselage, sweeping them forward is not going to be an easy task. Doing
so is going to ripple through where the fuel tanks are, possibly the
flapperon rigging and so on. If I were to every change out an engine, I
would make sure its weight was compatible with the wing sweep configuration
I already had.
Good Luck,
Milt

I'm putting a 2180 VW with redrive and 84 inch prop. Not sure what the
total weight will be, but great plaines shows it at 191lbs, but looks like
it doesn't include prop and exhaust or engine mount., and oil,,so I'd expect
the total FWF to be between 200 and 210. Does anybody have an accurate
weight on this installation.

Ron,
I would do some head scratching before I put a C-85 on a Series V and
carefully consider a 912 in light of the weight to power ratio. I'm putting
a Franklin A-235 on my Series V that offers 125 hp. Once I get it flying
and put some time on it, I plan to upgrade to high compression pistons which
will yield 145 hp. At that power to weight ratio I should have a pretty
good capability for the cost... about $14-$15K.
Good Luck,
Milt

My CAP 140 prop and gauge worked fine for 406 hours--then the gauge went
belly up. I was told by Craig at NSI that the guy that was making the gauges died
suddenly and they will have to find a new supplier. Unfortunately, Lance is
busy on some other project and the gauge problem is very low on his priority
list, so it may be a long wait. My prop is still working great and I'd hate to
be without it.

I found that Avemco was really high as well. I go through Insurance

He checks all the insurance companies and gets the best price.
If you go with IMG, mention me as the one who referred you. Maybe I'll get

busy that makes Falcon? Any service-response problems

I asked the Tri-Gear question about 3 months ago as I also have a model 3.
The response I got On this site was "Leave well enough alone" Well....... I'm a
"Glass half full Kinda guy" I talked to several people and one sent me some
pictures of a Kitfox airframe with the nose gear Weldments and ,If you want a
Castoring but, not steerable nose wheel you don't have to do alot.On the other
hand , I want a steerable nose wheel and have designed one that I think will
work just fine.As for the Mains ,if you go with Skystars design you'll have to
weld new tubes in to brace the area behind the seat and, the gear will have
coil springs ...much like a Cub.I'm going to use the grove gear they're wider
which will help with stability and the installation is simpler. OK guys nows
the time everybody gets to Bash the Guys who want to fly with the tail wheel in
the front .I know your not a true pilot till you fly a taildragger , but I
can lock my brakes at 60 M.P.H. and not have to crawl out fromunder my plane can
you?
