Ron,
Great to hear that your plane is so good now that you
have to pick nits. :-)
I was wondering whether you have enough dihedral in
the wings because of your statement below. The
building instructions should give the required amount.
I know that the earlier models had a bit less
directional and roll stability and this may be all it
is. But it would be worth checking to see if the
dihedral is off and if so, to correct it. That may
allow you to pick up a wing with rudder. Then you can
trim the plane better and maybe all your nits will
become microscopic.

STeve, I ordered some for my tundras from spruce. They still weren't
big enough and ended up shaving them a bit but i think they will work.
I never quite figured out whether i was going to drill my axle or weld a
threaded nut on end of axle nut but did weld brackets on inside.
Definately short on space there. I did put some wing lift fairings on
and a few other things but have not tested a grid for exact speeds yet
from last year! I'm around 90 though with a 582 and the prop set for
wharp speed.
I know it's all a trade off but the brochures said i'd be flying at 105
........ so since then I can ;'t get that out of my brain.

But I'm kind of curious why you want a set? Are you wanting amphibs? If
so, I would highly recommend the Czech amphibs as they are readily
available. They offer similar performance as the Aerocet, plus have more
floatation, which frankly the Aerocet is somewhat lacking if you have a
fourstroker under the cowl or like a lot of luxuries in the cabin. A couple
friends fly their Rans S7's on the Czech/Zenair amphibs and have absolutely
marvelous performance with a 912s for power. Weak link of the float? No
gear suspension, just the air in the tires. But not an issue from anyone
that I know operating them, even on grass. Also, they have no locker
storage compartments. But that could be easily remedied either by you and a
tin snips, or the factory when they make them. Also, they are not the
strongest floats ever made (however they are pretty light), but since you
already have experience with Zenairs on your airplane, you already probably
know the good and bad of what you can and can't do with them in rough
water.
I have photos of a Model IV on the Czech amphibs if you are interested.

with his Lite2 / 912S.
I tend to agree with you re weight aspects etc and will pass on your

Kurt, This has been my thoughts also. I have the hubcaps, though and
thought of cantilevering them from the inside with a brake fairing similar
to the way Aircoupe does it. I have a set of the SS supplied pants and was
planning on using the aft end as a mold to make the basic aft fairing and
fabricating the rest.

I purchased a set of these fairings and instantly gained almost 8 mph. They
are easy to fit (less than 2 hours) and they can be painted with Automotive
Urethane paint with excellent results. They are a little heavier than most
but I couldn't find anything detrimental.
I would recommend them highly to anyone considering them

Glad I Didn't get Flight Training In Russia!!!!!!!European people Must look
Differently at instruction. I was Fifteen Yrs. old My father had a friend who
was a German pilot in WW2. He ask him to take me"Up". John said he would.So to
the Airpark we went where John had a T-34 Beech that belonged to the CAP
Squadron . He sized me up and asked "You get sick?" I said "I don't know" He said
"I gonna make you Sick" ...well he did everything but run that T-34 into the
ground and I didn't get sick , so I guess in his eyes , I was worth teaching!!!!
(I'm 45 now ,Sure glad I didn't get sick) just wish my first flight didn't
have so maney Loops ,Rolls ,and Spins in it , not to mention someone had left
the conopy open and it had rained. First time we went inverted we got blasted
with about 5 gallons of Water! I guess everybody has to indure a little Hell
to get what they want

What you ask is impossible to answer. Your overhaul cost will depend upon
what they find. Does it need new pistons, cylinders, heads, camshaft,
crankshaft etc, etc etc? Can they just rework the heads vs. replacing? Is
the crankshaft in good shape, the gear box, the carbs? Is the crankcase
subject to the service bulletin? (cracks)
On mine, the crankcase, crankshaft and camshaft were good, but had to
replace 3 cylinders, two pistons and rework the heads. They replaced
bearings, seals rings etc., trued the valve covers and a few things I can't
remember. I think it was all just under $3000 not including shipping.
However, I had the carbs and gear box overhauled the year before for about
$600 or so. Also, mine had a new stator from the earlier recall and I had a
new oil pump from the previous service bulletin.
My overhaul was required because of foreign object ingestion (washers). The
A&P at Lockwood commented that other than the damage from ingestion, there
was little to no wear on the rest of the engine. The overhaul was done at
952 hours.
They did a great job with a fast turn around. The engine runs like new now.
They even had the Masterkraft high compression pistons in stock!
I recommend them without reservation.

PS.- If anyone wonders about the validity of the longer TBO of 1500 hours,
Lockwood told me they have seen engines come in from rental planes with 1800
hours showing little wear.

Thanks Cliff I know it's a matter of what they find. My engine has about 800
Hrs. and I had figured about $4-5,000 as the overhaul price . I built
raceing engines as a kid and know this is best left to experts. I agree with
Lockwoods reputation and will send them my engine

Be sure to call Lockwood for help finding a shipper. They may be able to

I have a model IV that I just purchased in Dec. It was completed in 95 but
has only 80 hours. The person I bought it from, (second owner, not builder)
put on about 25, but only flew it 3 hours in the last 3 years. It seems that he
knew very little about the engine and went by a "if it aint broke don't fix
it" mentality in regards to the recalls & items you mentioned to David (stator,
oil pump, etc). Based on your knowledge of the 912 what recommecdations
could you make as to the immediate necessity of these items. I plan to take it
to
the local Rotax dealer when the weather gets nice, but am wondering about
flying it before then. I haven't even flown it yet as it is not sealed well &
I
live in Wisconsin. The guy that ferried it home for me froze his butt off! I
had hoped to put in an hour here or there with my CFI on semi nice days so I
can have my tailwheel endorsement by spring. Do you think this is wise or
should I wait until the shop can make the updates? I would have been more
reluctant to buy from a guy who seemed to have done so little to it but with only
80 hrs it seemed like a good bet. What are your thoughts?

(I'm 45 now ,Sure glad I didn't get sick) just wish my first flight didn't
have so maney Loops ,Rolls ,and Spins in it , not to mention someone had
left
the conopy open and it had rained. First time we went inverted we got
blasted
with about 5 gallons of Water! I guess everybody has to indure a little
Hell
to get what they want

If the stator has not been changed, do a thorough inspection of all the
wiring. I'm not positive but I think there was only one known failure and I
think it was caused by using a caustic engine cleaner. I don't know how
serious the oil pump bulletin was. They changed from a rolled drive pin to a
solid one. I have no idea how many failures there were.
One of the major bulletins was the rocker arms. Mine was not subject to it,
but many were.
All the Service bulletins, service letters etc are listed at the above web
site. Surely you don't expect me to recommend flying without taking care of
these service bulletins, do you?
You'll have to make your own judgment about whether or not to fly.

You know, you can buy two different types of "SAME" EGT indicator, they
look the same and no visual difference. So, what's the difference?
The difference is in the instrument's P/N., and this tell you about the
calibration temperature, or better, the temperature where the instrument
is "most" accurate.
There is two calibration temperatures, one at 32 deg. F and the other at
70 deg. F. The one calibrated at 32 deg. F. is identified with a "S"
after the P/N., and the 70 deg. F. version has the P/N. without this "S"
index.
The "S" version is said to be used for snowmobiles, the other one is for
our use, -or is it?

Now, here is the question; Why is it necessary to have two calibration
point?
Lots of us, esp. those living in the "inland", can have temperature's
qualifying for the "S" model in the winter, -and the "origin" we are
using in the summer, agree?
Can't we have just one calibration point for all conditions?
A little to remember; An EGT thermocouple system is reading differential
temperature, the different between the cold junction and our EGT probe.
If the actual cockpit temp. is less than the "cal. temp." the indicator
show to high reading, and if the cockpit temp. is higher than the "cal.
temp." the instrument read to low.
Also, the cold junction temperature is said to be the same as the
cockpit temperature, is it? And-, how many of us have a thermometer for
cockpit temperature?
Well, you've got something to ponder about for the weekend (, if the
weather is bad) :) ...

I was inquiring about the Jabiru 2200, Mike, especially about the modifications
that was needed to the cowling on a model 3. I saw your pictures on Jabiru USA
site and I noticed that you had to extend its length. I also noticed that your
cowling is pointing a bit up.
Any comment your have on that would be welcomed.

Yes, this was my first comment, however, they have some holes cutted out
into the lower front cowl. Also, up here at 69 deg North, high oil
temperature is -more or less, a "nonexistent" problem. .. :) ..

The cowling (Model IV) was a tough job compared to the installation of the
engine. I had to lengthen the the bump cowling by about five inches and
widen it by one-half to three quartes if an inch. I cut the top half of the
bump cowling in half and the same to the bottom cowling. I basically had the
bump cowling cut into quarters. Jabiru provides a fiberglass insert which
fits into the front opening in the cowling. This had to be enlarged because
I widened the other cowling. Lastly I had to double the airflow exit which
was the easiest of all the cowling modifications. Half of the lower aft
cowling was already open and all I had to do was continue the opening all
the way across the bottom.
I found that in the process of modifying the cowling that I got to a point
where if I fixed one thing something else would change. I finally decided
that a slight pitch up was the best of all the other options. In fact I
kind of like the look, I may change my story, I designed it that way.

Roger, there are generator coils at the rear of the engine that put out
about 18 Amps.
It is good for most flying, but will be challenged by position lights and
landing lights.

Now, first to the "go - no go item", yes this is the probe with it's
cable, this one work correctly or simply not working at all.
So, everything to check for, is the accuraty of the indicator. Here we
use a millivolt generator, at last able to give some 40 mV, also we'll
need a resistor to compensate for the missing (EGT) probe with cable
during the test.
There is two kind of thermocouple preferred to use, iron/constantan and
chromel/alumel. The first one is less expensive, have a little less max.
usage temperature than the chromel/alumel. The less exp. is mostly used
in our kind of aircraft.
To do the calibration we need the correct table to use for our kind of
thermocouple, mV (milli Volt) to temperature in deg. F. or deg. C. Those
tables can easily be found on the internet.
Now we use the millivolt-generator with the compensating resistor in
serial (with the positive output from the millivolt generator).
The voltage we use here is the correct one, and we must remember to
add/subtract the comp. temp.

That's probably an OK idea for some of us, but speaking for myself, I've got a
bad

of Beauty Challenged going. (I think my mom musta' beat me with a Big Ol' Ugly
Stick!)
Too hideous for mixed company. The only way I get to go to other people's houses
is to fly
over them! It's pretty pathetic when the polar bears turn and run away. I kinda'
smell bad too, but then
that's why I'm on the internet because I actually stink over the telephone.
I guess I could leave out actual pictures of myself......sounds like a good idea,
the Piper Cub guys (or is that gays?, not really)
have something like that.

Matronics does not have a profile database, and Matt and I have been in
discussion about this. I am programming a profile database that will enable
all to enter their profile as information that others can see. The main use
of this is to eliminate the many messages we get such as "are there any
Kitfox owners in Florida?" It is almost there, so you can expect it to be
online in a week or two.
I will keep you informed when it is online.

I have one of the most electrical sucking kitfox ever made. Lowell can atest
to this. It has
moving maps strobe mav lite interior lites transponder eis encoder , ok i
will stop, but it is loaded.
At nite I dont taxi with everything on but have no problem running
everything once in the air.

STeve, I ordered some for my tundras from spruce. They still weren't
big enough and ended up shaving them a bit but i think they will work.
I never quite figured out whether i was going to drill my axle or weld a
threaded nut on end of axle nut but did weld brackets on inside.
Definately short on space there. I did put some wing lift fairings on
and a few other things but have not tested a grid for exact speeds yet
from last year! I'm around 90 though with a 582 and the prop set for
wharp speed.
I know it's all a trade off but the brochures said i'd be flying at 105
........ so since then I can ;'t get that out of my brain.
