My kitfox is a 1994 model. The fuel valve is leaking & I need a
replacement. The type I have is not rebuildable. It is located under the
dash, in a round housing, with rubber fuel lines swaged into the fuel
valve body. The rubber fuel lines connect to aluminium fuel lines with AN
fittings. I Was wondering what other kitfox owners replaced these valves
with when they began to leak. Is there another valve that I can connect to
the aluminium fuel line without having to change things around. regards
Julian Lynn.
Julian,
I have always used a common ball and seat valve found at Home Depot and
most places like that. They have a brass body about 2 inches long with a
handle that rotates 90 degrees (on/off). The valves are ball and seat construction
and haven't leaked yet. I also had one on each wing tank for a while. The
valves are designed so a barbed fitting can screw into each end for rubber
lines. Cost about $3.00. each. The one I have before me is by B&K and marked
WOG
(Water/Oil/Gas). The inner construction of this valve is a stainless steel
ball that seats on two (input/output) nylon seats.
One of the original valves supplied by Skystar had some problems other
than leaking. The body is a brown plastic type material where the inner part
rotates to open the flow. Around the hole is an "O" ring that has been known to
tear and clog the fuel line. It sounds like you might have this old type
valve. IMHO, this valve is an accident looking for a place to happen. Leaking
is the minor problem. The old valve was discussed at length several years ago.

Hi Elbie -
Hey I don't think anywhere in the thread anybody was suggesting to
do that (tail up with a tailwind). I think it was mostly just a
discussion about tail up taxiing in general. I think it's pretty
obvious that doing this in a tailwind is not such a great idea.
I think Michel, etc. have some good points as well, because they're
flying with ski's
It's also a good idea to practice on grass also, since you don't
have the problem of building up speed so rapidly as on asphalt.
But like learning to ride a wheelie on a motorcycle, you go into it
knowing full well that you could end up on your butt ... And that
it might hurt. :)
Regards,
Jeff.
*********************
To all, I don't want to say I told you so, please be careful!!
Please don't try it with a 15kt tailwind! Doesn't' work that way in real
life with tailwind, have seen two up on nose and one upside down trying to
look
cool taxiing with tail up downwind. Careful out there! It can get
expensive,
props aren't cheap! if a metal prop on asphalt crankshafts aren't cheap
either.

Jeff,
I sure wasn't pointing fingers, just trying to get pilots to think before
acting. You would be amazed what I've seen in over 40 years at airports! The
one that ended up on its back was a CFI & student:-( ~~Don't think he works
there any more! His excuse was he was teaching the student how to save time on
the hobbs! Pretty expensive lesson for him.

Dave thanks for the photos. I have saved them this time. And thanks
John King as well.
We are also missing P/N 42923.00 heat shield. This appears to be an
aluminium piece, triangle in shape, which fits between the muffler
and gascolator - apparently to stop heat getting to the gascolator
and vaporising fuel. John obviously has his gascolator somewhere
else.
My guess is that it has a lip on the two sides which touch the
radiator baffle and is riveted to the baffle but not to the
firewall. Can anyone shed any light?

Rod,
The mushers will be leaving White Mountain beginning at 12:30 this
afternoon....headed for Nome.
They should be here sometime late tonight. (Let the parties begin!)
As I am a Land Surveyor the 'skeeters are of particular "interest" to
me. (Let's not forget the no-see-ums
and the white-socks, my particular "favorite")
The only place I've been that rivals the 'skeeters of Alaska are those
in Texas, especially S. Texas!
One thing you failed to mention was that just before break-up one needs
to get out
to the dog area and scoop up all the frozen poop before it turns to
stinky brown goo.
Good luck with the wings. Where are you moving them to?
Are you near FAI and are you aware of the military
NOTAM this June. They will be jamming the GPS for about two weeks.
What's up with that?
If you haven't heard about this I can forward you the info and map.

Hello Scott,
To prevent your engine from stalling on rapid throttle
movement,.........
Thanks Lance,
I'll adjust as you recommend. I'll be doing my annual inspection the end
of this month.
Your advice is timely.

This in response to Julian's response. I was wondering why you don't have

recommended removing them, but I don't recall why.

Hey Jeff,
I'll send you the pics I have of the engine install on N24ZM. 560 hrs so far with
the only problem being a broken alternator drive coupling at 480 hrs. TCM has
a 500 hr SB on this but mine and at least 1 other Kitfox builder never got
to 500 hrs before the coupler broke. Unfortunately, servicing the coupler requires
removal of the alternator, which requires removal of the engine, which is
a royal pain in the neck.

Kerry,
The Series 6 with the 912 firewall forward does not have a gascolator. The header
tank behind the co-pilot seat (low point in the system) has a quick drain
valve that is accessible under the fuselage for fuel sampling.

Hi Scott:
I'm not sure my following comment is much help, but here it is. I used to
have an RV-4 with an Ellison TBI on an O-360. The engine quit twice - both
times when I advanced the throttle quickly - once when recovering from a
practice high altitude stall and once on final that appeared to be a little
short. I was advised (I can't remember by who) to avoid rapid throttle
advances. It never happened again in the following eight years. Apparently
it was good advice. Although both events got my attention, everything
worked out OK. I was able to restart in the air after the stall, and I was
able to land dead stick on the final. It turns out I wasn't that short. I
didn't realize the airplane would glide that far. Since then I have
attempted to have a better understanding of the glide capabilities of the
airplanes I fly and to keep my patterns within gliding range.
I hope this is of some help.

Subject: | A question about intercom plugs |
--> Kitfox-List message posted by: michel <michel@online.no>
Hello friends,
I have a Flightcom IISX intercom unit mounted in the panel. I wish to purchase
two Comtronics Ultra Pro 2000 helmets (compulsory in Norway) with headset
integrated.
The problem is: The Comtronics headsets have only one jack plug for
mic/headset, and the Flightcom intercom has two separate.
Can I modify the plugs myself or is there other things to consider, such as
different impedance? Comtronics says their headset will fit all radio/intercom
but ...
Buying a matching Comtronics intercom won't be too expensive but I have 8
small holes already drilled in my panel for the Flightcom unit and they won't
match.
Thanks in advance,
Michel
